Thank you for all the kind (and insightful) comments, people...
At risk of being shouted down by those who know much more about music than I, to me there is something of They Might be Giants in the music as well.
No conscious influence, but I'm a big TMBG fan (Bob is listening to TMBG as I type) -- so it could have crept in by stealth. You may be more musically perceptive than you think, dude.
Does it mean if some cretinous bogan does a huge burnout nearby, that this is an integral part of the piece?
Actually, if you listen to 'River vs Sea' through headphones (and listen carefully), you can hear Blair's neighbour idling his engine. The neighbour wanted song-writing credit and we had to get our lawyers to sort him out.
Was ['River vs Sea'] meant to be longer, because it seems to cut off rather suddenly at the end
No, that's all we wrote. But the abrupt fade-out may well be a result of the neighbour's engine... I'm not sure...

Can I recommend cycling? My Dad was a marathon/half-marathon runner for many years and had endless injuries. Frankly, I'd like someone to show me the medical evidence that humans have evolved for that amount of running.
I've been cycling for years (longest cycle 2,000 km -- not in one day) and never had a single injury.
Furthermore with cycling you get to integrate it into your daily transport needs. Like going to work. Y'know, commute and save time/money at gym at the same time.
Good luck with the mo', dude.

So many clever and amusing responses here. Such a shame I've been pulsating too much to fully enjoy them...
So was it a beehive (a wooden structure full of bees...) or a bee swarm or what that you decided to attack with a lawnmower?
Just to clarify the sequence of events...
I saw a thingish-looking thing on the lawn as I was mowing, and I thought to myself: "Doesn't look important, just mow it, dude."
Then suddenly bees were everywhere...
But I like to think that even if it had been a proper timber beehive on the lawn, I would still have had a go at mowing it. My lawnmower is quite a good one, and I like to see what it can do.
Swelling is gone, and now I'm at the itching stage.

Mi lawnmower es su lawnmower, Keith...

Surprisingly, the lawnmower was actually a blessing. Most of the bees tried to attack it instead of me.
In late-breaking news, my fingers now look as though they belong to Gerry Brownlee...

A very nice thought-provoking essay, Slarty (or whoever you really are).
P.S. And (without thinking it over for very long) the GST/Carbon tax scheme sounds like a brilliant concept.

Don't say things like that, dude. Even as a joke.
You've just given me all the symptoms of a heart attack.

Perhaps I should point out that you can pre-order a copy (or copies) of Emma's book via the PA Books website...
... and then scroll down until you see Emma's cover.
You can also view the table of contents and first chapter by clicking on 'Read more' and then the 'Click to see inside' button.
I can testify that it's a pretty compelling read...
And BTW the first edition will be quite limited -- so if you want one, get in quick!

So let me get this straight. We are supposed to praise, party and celebrate because the biggest software company in the world (or near enough) manages to produce an OS that is nearly as efficient as the one they produced 6 years ago?
Yeah, that thought kind of occurred to me as well...

Thanks for the kind words, Russell! You were an excellent guest -- bringing, as you did, most of a whiskey distillery with you.
And Cantabrians can relax: Emma and I are arranging a book-launch for Christchurch (in fact, Mr Dalziel's name has been mentioned). Of course, I just have the small matter of finishing my book first (a dozen illustrations to go)...
