You also made me think about my Grandpa story again.

Yep, that particular essay of yours is a favourite of mine. And, by the way, I reckon it'd make a good opening piece for your book.

I'd be hard pressed to judge whose account was more wince-inducing: Russell or Joanna. It's giving me post-traumatic stress disorder just reading this stuff.

Very glad you're on the mend, Russell.

  • Southerly: Bubbles Over Blockhouse Bay,

Very glad that people have enjoyed this piece. And it's great to hear about other families and grandparents.

I'm willing to sign an affidavit to the effect that Bob is not the result of a cloning experiment on my part. But, I admit, there is a resemblance -- although, unlike me, Bob will hopefully retain his good looks into adulthood (a kind-hearted comment, though, Emma). My mother said it gave her quite a turn the first time she saw Bob after we'd returned to New Zealand.

Yeah, that rather ran through my mind as I was reading my grandfather's memoirs...

So you'll be encouraging your grandfather to work on volume 2?

Doing my best -- but my grandfather isn't too keen right at the moment. Says he needs a good long break from writing.

Nice to think of that same chair giving comfy-ness to three generations...

'Elk' is just the North American word for boring old 'red deer'.

Did you get that waking-up-feeling-like-you-can't-breathe thing on the first night? I had that in spades when I was in Elma, Colorado (altitude over 3 km) -- but one of my fellow engineers had blood actually coming out of his eyes, which was way cool.

I strongly suspect that one of those three facts is wrong, Craig. I think you'll find that most of humanity has certain minimum standards.

Whew... it's a relief to know that Jolisa is a doctor.

Without her reassuring presence as a medical professional, I can see that some people might misconstrue our new look.

By the way, as I see it, the new look is mostly about getting out of doors and being comfortable with your own body.

Or, to put it another way, it's nothing more than healthy and normal people thinking about other healthy and normal people from a medical/scientific/taxidermic (and, in Graeme's case, animal husbandry) perspective.

I once tried this (writing like Lhaws) many years ago when reviewing one of his soon-to-be-remaindered 'books' for NBR. By the end of it all I felt like my neurons were so scrambled I needed to be strapped into some Joe 90-type mind-altering device and spun round at the speed of light in order to regain the ability to order breakfast, let alone write coherently.

Yeah, I had to read waaay_ too much Laws to write this piece. Now I'm sitting here trying to compose a serious book review, and I keep inadvertently dropping into Laws's prose (lack of) style. Oh, the pain. Strap me into the Joe 90 device, please.

My heart lifted when I saw your comment -- alas it really isn't classic Laws.

The column more-or-less makes sense. Not his opinion, of course, but -- comparatively speaking-- it does have a logical flow. I blame the sub-editors. They've ruined it for everyone.

Never mind -- there's always next week.

David, did you apply eye shadow when you wrote this, just to make sure you really got into character?

I slathered my eyes with mascara until I looked like a giant sexually-ambiguous panda.

Mind you, all pandas look sexually-ambiguous to me.

That's the problem with lesbians -- they have no sense of humour about being portrayed as vicious, dildo-wielding loonies.
