I don't think Farrar seriously believes Dotcom is Whaledump. It's just more wholly disingenuous misdirecting.

This gets into the same economic issues as prisoner work schemes: either people are made to work in extremely low value jobs, or they compete with employers who have to pay much higher wages.
There was another part in Dotcom's speech where he said something about a "monitoring system for government workers" which made me raise my eyebrows too. It's a much better use of time to criticise them for things like this than to obsess about whether Dotcom is "the hacker".

Hosking’s interview with Laila Harre is amazing. He declares that Dotcom “admitted yesterday to criminal activity”, construes the speech as a “threat” to John Key, completely fails to read a later Dotcom text (Pam was “screaming at her ex”) as a joke, etc.

I guess so, but it wasn’t really how it came across in the hall. Maybe I missed something. But the idea that he admitted to past hacking escapades, which was what the reports said, is demonstrably absurd. It’s just not news.
Dotcom’s been part of the roadshow, and it’s not hard to see why. He speaks well, he’s famous and people like him. I do think he could have left out John Key altogether.

my sense is that there may have several people independently* exploring the ruins of Slater’s server as it fell over. But that is just speculation.
*independent in the sense of a bunch of unrelated people going “get him” at the same time
Fisher's source does seem to have different material. Plus it's possible either may have shared with someone other than Hager. Right when this started, one person tweeted me alluding to having "the whole site".

Guys (and it’s mostly us chaps) please think twice how you’re talking about that e-mail exchange, which could most genrously be described as casually & grotesquely misogynistic, and why. A lot of the commentary around this, and PAS is far from the worse, sure hits my ear as being less about sympathy or concerns for the safety of women in the Young Nats (or anywhere else) than scoring political points. This isn’t just about Cameron Slater and Simon Lusk, or David Farrar and Nicky Hagar. There are human beings here who deserve better.

I’ve addressed that particular issue extensively over time Russell, often being attacked for it. In fact I was banned from Whale Oil for going and confronting their attitude to rape and Tania Billingsley. This is what I posted there:
So, no, you have at no point addressed the substance of that passage in the book – that these creeps were essentially plotting the rape of young women who were members of the National Party – but you’ve gone on and on and on about the peripheral issue of who organised the party they were going to. That shows that they discussed doing it, nothing more. Hide has said it didn’t happen and there are no facts to indicate that it did actually happen is there?
Well, there's the very thinly-veiled threat about Hide's personal life, posted on Whaleoil exactly as promised in the hacked messages.
But you do realise, Pete, that conspiracy to commit blackmail is quite a serious criminal offence? Surely you realise that.
