Watching a good TV news camera operator in action can be a beautiful thing, they are really good at getting what they need, but in a situation like this where the focus is a single person in a confined area it’s always going to get a bit silly.
Yeah, I do appreciate that camera operators have needs, but it’s not like she hadn’t given them plenty already. It seems like it was them getting between her and her family (and by her account, jostling her family to do so) that was the issue.
It’s interesting to look at who’s got the stories now she’s a Grammy winner. Principally, 3 News and Campbell Live, via David Farrier, who has been earning the trust of the family and the management for at least a year. That’s how you do it.
Ironically, TVNZ, TV3 and Prime could have been right on the inside of all this. But all three last year rejected a prop for a fly-on-the-wall doco following Lorde’s first US tour. It had been cleared by the management, but they lacked the vision to see what was happening and the nerve to take a punt. TV3 should be very grateful to David Farrier.

It really was. It would have been out of our range normally, but the old friend who organised the gathering maintains the property and got us a very good deal. There are a lot of wealthy folk with fancy dogs at Onetangi at this time of year.

I am interested in Damien’s piece because it is revealing of human frailty and emotions – the media worker as a human being – rather than an intellectualised, professional image, with the inherent contradictions and failings of chipping out a career in the constraints of a large media machine.
This is important. In focusing on the greater analysis, we can forget that it's also about the strengths, weaknesses, foibles and passions of individuals within what can be quite odd and demanding environments.

Only just noticed this Herald video of Lorde's arrival at the airport, which gives some insight into what media behaviour she was upset by.
She spends ages there, being interviewed, posing for pics and and signing autographs, but it's when the family tries to leave there's a problem -- especially when all the camerapeople start running and jostling and get between Ella and her family. I appreciate that a cameraman's job is to get every shot, but what was Heather du Pleissis Allen doing joining the bullrush? What was she hoping to get that couldn't be got by maintaining a little more dignity?
I suppose it's not that bad, but it's really pretty dumb behaviour. Calm down, everyone.
