Good that the councillors are using the opportunity of the mayor's indiscretions to try and forge more workable relationships. The legislation gives the mayor the power to propose policy and budgets to the Governing Body, but in practice it seemed to involve directing policy before it was ever decided by the Governing Body. Several times, in answer to questions I asked, eg why the Unitary Plan could not be "staged", I was told the pressure was coming on staff from the "mayor's office". This was getting the cart before the horse, as the mayor's office should have proposed these policies openly at GB meetings, not by directing staff. The only method of directing the CEO or any staff should be through decisions taken by all councillors at meetings.

Did you think the disclosure of the names of some of those who donated to Brash’s National Party through the Waitemata Trust via Nicky Hager was a “fairly grievous breach of … privacy”?
If it could be demonstrated that there was a public interest to the level shown in The Hollow Men, I’d have no problem. The Hollow Men breached the privacy of many of those it depicted. But that’s not the same thing as expecting the National Party to simply release the names of all the people who, in good faith, made legitimate anonymous donations to its campaign.

Verlaines #2 = energetic and enjoyable.
It really was splendid -- and the fact that Jane Dodd in particular was having such a great time on stage just added to it. 'Lying in State' was like a jet engine.
Happily, it was all recorded and shot by Radio NZ.

Well clearly, we couldn't get through a week without any mention of Lorde, so here's her surprise Christmas present single, 'No Better', an out-take from Pure Heroine. I can see why they left it off -- it's off on a slightly different path than the rest of the album, with its trap rhythm, but it's a pretty cool thing to have up your sleeve.

I run this place, I've run it for a long time and I run it well. Sometimes it takes more attention, emotional energy and empathy than I feel I have to spare. It's worthwhile because this is a unique environment.
