Back on topic, Hannah Rosin at Slate has a blistering indictment of “Anarchist Soccer Mom”, author of “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother”.
Partly, it’s the privacy issues – “Michael” is now forever tagged as a psycho. But, also, it’s some of the other, somewhat disturbing stuff, she’s written about her children. She seems a bit of a nut herself, frankly.
I feel a bit remiss. I did check some of her other posts, but didn’t notice the odder stuff. It’s like Joanne Black’s family columns on steroids.

However. I, like Danielle, am wary of anyone who says “oh, but testosterone”. The dude who broke my ribs when I was a teenager doesn’t get to use that excuse any more than I get to say I provoked him cos I was on the rag.

I find it hard not to consider the power of these “feeble” hormones. They control practically every teeny wee bit of your body. Why shouldn’t they have some effect on your mental welbeing? It is only logical, surely.
And it’s equally logical that there are also complex social reasons for the ways men behave, particularly in families. Apart from anything else, the young, white, male killers Danielle was talking about weren't generally aggressive, testosterone types.

This NYT story is amazing: Newtown turns out to have been right in the middle of the gun-rights war.
Also, Lanza and his mother were exactly the kind of people whose idea of a family good time was going out and shooting at shit.

If I lived there I’d probably break the law and get a gun.
The rate in Mexico is actually 15 guns per capita, same as Australia and less than New Zealand's 22.6. The violence is relatively concentrated. But if you lived in a Drug War place, yeah.

Just found out the country with the tightest gun control laws in North America is Mexico.
Also the country with a deadly Drug War, which kills tens of thousands of people a year.

I have been arguing (SO POINTLESSLY, Jesus Christ on a bike) on Facebook with my sister and some other people (southern, Christian, Republican, rural) since this happened.
I guessing that saying “here’s the DATA!” isn’t working for you.
But ... the South has way more gun homicide than the rest of the US. What's God saying there?

I am absolutely in favour of better mental health treatment in the US, but the main problem with gun violence in the US is not mass killings, as horrific as they are. It’s the people dying by ones and twos and threes
Around 30,000 each year, plus another 100,000 injured. It's an astonishing number.
