and I know I’m an aging hack but what is the fuss over Home Brew? I’ve tried, but still don’t think they’re as good, or as outrageous, as they think they are.
Really? You've heard the album? I think it's a really important record.
To my ears, their backing band made them appear rather amateur.

A very small data point in my theory that there’s few things more banal, in art or in life, than people trying so damn hard to be “outrageous” you can almost predict every outrage before it happens. Home Brew Crew isn’t even that good at awards show acting out. An incontinent goat, some swears and a feeble diss of God and the Prime Minister?
I don’t think they were really trying hard to be outrageous, though. That Ben Boyce thing near the beginning was just insulting – I could see why Tom didn’t take it well. (As it happened, Home Brew weren’t smashed – they were working – but one or two others were.)
And the diss of God makes more sense if you’re familiar with ‘Good God’ from the album, which is an amazing piece of work:
Ditto for the calling-out of the PM. They’ve said all that already in ‘Listen to Us’. Like it or not, it's who they are.

The NZ accent, as portrayed in the TVNZ clip, seemed a bit more “English” in 1972 than today? At least among the majority of those speaking on camera?
Yes. We've discussed that before here. Like many other things, the accent seemed to change around 1980, perhaps because the US and Australia became bigger cultural influences in our lives.
Partly, it's just the fact that we tended to have a "proper" voice for TV and radio, but I think the New Zealand accent has been quite different within out lifetimes.

I wonder how many BBCers Saville had by the short and curlies that meant nothing would be done about him?? Just sayin.
It was more subtle, and more pervasive, than that. He was a lot of people's meal ticket, for sure. But it's actually quite shocking the way the culture just let it go. So many people knew, but Britain's much-vaunted tabloids never went for him while he was alive.

Does that underline the value of having the likes Russell Poulter there in the universities, beholden to no one?
I'm not sure if you recall, but Poulter was also the one prepared to stick his head up and say that the evidence in Nicky Hager's Seeds of Distrust didn't make Corngate a slamdunk. He copped some unwarranted slights on his independence for his trouble.
