I think they kicked the regulars out for the evening :-)
Although it's becoming more common for the sports bar to be used as an overflow or lounge. It's quite comfy.

We ran through an updated version of the talks for the BDO partners' conference on Sunday -- yes, a room full of accountants.
It was bloody compelling hearing those talks again.

She seems to have the ability to get the wrong end of the stick on pretty much any issue you care to choose.
On child poverty:

GCSB:
Do none of the radio broadcasters or Labour actually realise that there is a mole in the organisation and that person probably spoke to Nicky Hager, does nobody realise that someone within the organisation has breached security? Does nobody want to hold that person accountable?
Not only that, it is NOT important, and it is bloody naive to think that the GCSB doesn’t spy on NZ citizens. They wouldn’t be doing their job if they only spied within their limitations. This information should not have even been released to the public as national security is at risk, and why is the mole not being held accountable. I cannot believe the absolute level of ignorance from radio announcers and it is seriously frustrating me which is why it’s taken me so long to rant about it, but I cannot take it any longer.

Euthanasia (I had trouble choosing which paragraph to excerpt here):
My final point and this one will be brief because there’s not a lot to say on the matter. Euthanasia is legalised murder. A few years ago I had a cat who was three years old, her name was Chrissy, and she was the daughter of another of my cats, Inca. Due to physical trauma when she was a kitten, she must have developed a head injury and been left with a psychological condition. It was so bad at one point we made the decision to have her euthanased, and took her home and buried her I believe. Looking back, we could have taken her to the vet and asked for a course of medication. We could have looked after her to the point where she got better, but we didn’t even try? Now imagine this for a second. That’s guilt from having a CAT euthanased, imagine how much worse that would be for a human? You would be kicking yourself thinking it was murder, and quite honestly, when you make the decision to end someone’s life, no matter what the circumstances, it is murder.
It’s like WTF is her calling in life.
I see she’s “Team Leader/News Writer at Australian Associated Press” and is working towards a Masters degree. What’s her professional work like?

I don’t know if that’s true; in fact, I think it would have played out the same way. Say it had been a Fairfax journalist who broke the original story – why would Claire hold back from investigating her tip-off about Ira?
I can't help but think that the Herald and Fairfax's mutual abhorrence of acknowledging each other in print might have got in the way there :-)
