I reckon this should create a breadstick cage, that I could put over the solider bread figure baked separately.
How fabulous.

He started out well with the Tuhoe raid issue, but his bit on Nick Smith came across as a bit No True Scotsman-ish to me.
But even the Tuhoe part relies on the reader embracing his personal intuitions about Tame Iti. Holmes a a serial offender in inviting readers to regard his feelings as facts.

It is a strange day, indeed, when Paul Holmes makes sense.
Sorta. It’s clearly some sort of correction for the infamous Waitangi Day column, but it’s as disorganised an argument as usual. Holmes doesn’t have evidence for things: he “thinks”, “knows” and “feels” them. In this instance he seems basically unfamiliar with the details of the case.
Which doesn’t stop him putting himself in the story: “I used to write [Tame Iti] off as a cocky little bastard. But then I noticed that a lot of people wrote me off too as a cocky little bastard.”
Pick a topic, and stick to it, dammit.
Heh. You don’t read his column very often, do you?

They’re so particular about what they’ll buy.
But they still buy weeds ;-)
Heh. Otoh, they'll stand there for 10 minutes carefully choosing the best weeds in the bin -- and throwing the others back with something approaching disdain.

On the fig question, I had been tthinking that the very sunniest spot in the garden, sheltered by bigger trees to the south and a pictureskew old shed might be the place.
Ours is hard up against the deck on the northeast side of our section, somewhat sheltered by other trees to the north. We've had the best year ever -- the grey summer seems to have suited it and there are fewer possums coming over from the reserve. The riflemen have pecked a few, but there have still been many big figs.
I dried some and made a wonderful dish for a barbecue -- halve the figs, push some goat cheese into the cavity, wrap in prosciutto and do both sides on the hot plate. Amazing.
