The temporary earthquake village looks very sociable. No doubt soon you will be found hanging over a back fence and sharing a quick ciggie with your neighbours while you share stories of the year that has passed

The flowery road cones are amazing, and… is it just me, or is that the kind of response that was never going to come top-down? I can’t imagine council coming up with that.
I found the bottom-up responses inspiring the last time I was in Christchurch. The response to institutional failure could simply have been despair, but people did something better.

At the risk of turning this into a Public Address circle jerk, you (and David and Blair) were pretty fucking awesome too.
I remember looking up as Emma, David and Blair frankly shared their experience at that Wellington Great Blend and everyone in the room, even the old blokes behind the bar at the bowling club, was still, just listening. It was an extraordinary thing.

I read a piece linked on my fb wall today (searching …) available here that mentioned JFK had used [edit: LSD] while President. Had not previously heard that.
It appears to be the case. Leary alluded to it more than once.
But JFK pretty much rattled when he walked -- painkillers (for his wartime back injury), sedatives, amphetamines, etc. All properly prescribed, naturally.
