  • Field Theory: A moment of national significance, in reply to George Darroch,

It’s pretty intense. And pretty beautiful. I’m hardly nationalistic, and while I love rugby the hype is a little much sometimes. But when I watch this… I understand.

What I loved, and what I loved about the parade the next day, is that it shows us modern multi-cultural Auckland. It gave us common cause and it brought us out onto the streets together. I think that will have enduring benefit for our city.

When both Stuff and Herald sites are carrying stories about Key’s over-eager trotie handshake, yes.

He managed to look like a doofus at both the beginning and the end of the tournament.

  • Field Theory: A moment of national significance, in reply to Tom Semmens,

Key’s reception by the crowd at the final was lacklustre at best

And, to be fair, Len Brown's reception on the victory parade was muted too. I think we didn't really see a place for politicians in any of it.

  • Field Theory: A moment of national significance,

By the 70 minute mark I think I'd accepted the idea that we were going to lose, that there would be some heartbreaking moment that would take it away. Even after the whistle, it took a wee bit to come right.

  • Hard News: When the Game is Over, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

Let's watch the "Join Together" video and marvel in the slightly uncomfortable, almost racist lyrics that seemed pretty ordinary in the mid '70s:

Nah, not racist, but ... it seems unusual to take on both race and religion in such a tune.

Where did munter come from Russell? I heard it was South African but can never find anything to back that up

No, people assume that but I'm certain it's not true. It predates any South African influence on the vernacular. Which is just as well, because "munt" is a nasty word in Afrikaans slang.

The "nek minnit" thing is older than that. My partner was using it about 6 years ago, and when I asked him where it came from, he said his ex used to say it all the time. So it's at least 10 years old.

    Fascinating!

A bit like munter/munted, then. I thought those words were just used by people I knew, then -- nek minnit -- it was all mainstream and I was explaining "munter" to a quizzical Kim Hill.

  • Hard News: Winning the RWC: it's complicated, in reply to Sacha,

Finals weekend will bring a torrent of dosh for Auckland businesses, we’re assured. I’m pretty sure most of their headline figure is just the stadium ticket sales.

I think butchers are going to do well. The rush started yesterday up at Westmere, apparently. The whole city is going to smelled of charred flesh on Sunday afternoon.
