And therein lies the fail. There are no more “gatekeepers” in the old sense of being an exclusive source. What radio needs to be is a curator, a recommender, a trusted reviewer. And even then it may be too late.

I don't think all those words are incompatible. Jen goes and and finds good music in the same places that other fans do, but she also gets sent stuff -- a lot of stuff -- directly.

There's also an upload page on the Radio 1 website that automatically allocates tracks to the different regional presenters based on the postcode given by the uploader. Nifty.

And in other news the 'Talking Heads' feature in the second issue of Volume, out today, is myself and Tom Scott in conversation.

I think “not yet” might be the answer. Found last week’s edition, but not the current one.

Good going! Also, www.volumemagazine.co.nz redirects to a Facebook page.

Are you sure? Nzherald.co.nz’s Entertainment page looks the same as ever and doesn’t seem to mention “Volume” anywhere, nor any of the print Volume’s cover stories.

I know. It looks like the content is online, just not clearly marked as to origin. A bit odd.

“Home Brew’s inability to meet funding critera suggest that, frankly, the criteria were wrong” – um, didn’t Homebrew get funding under the old NZOA system back in March and June this year, prior to Making Tracks launch?

Duh. I completely forgot that. Have amended.

Just clarifying – I’m not just shrugging my shoulders there. I’d like to know what went wrong too. I reckon there might have been just too many fingers in the pie and no-one singularly responsible ?

This has been a problem all along. Central government came up with Queen’s Wharf and then made it local government’s problem. Even a few weeks ago, no one was clear on where things would be located.

So the tupperwaka (another govt fait accompli), originally planned for Queen’s Wharf, got shifted to the Viaduct late in the piece – and the giant rugby ball, long destined for Aotea Square, was put on Queen’s Wharf at the last moment, thus further reducing the capacity there. The RWC minister’s office has been confusing the hell out of other stakeholders for two years now.

Which casts a certain light on Murray McCully’s furious phone calls to council leaders on Friday night.

The placement of that faulty double sided screen at the bottom of Albert street was a mistake. Several screens further along Quay Street would have been better.

Yep, that screen was causing problems by 3pm when I was down there. When it didn’t actually work, that just made it worse.

This has been my biggest take out beef with recent BDOs. Get a whole lot of excited inebriants (not a word?) and close them in a confined space in front of stage with no easy exits. Crowds do tend to self regulate, as long as they have the room.

But the BDO itself has cleaned up its act since the Red Hot Chili Peppers year, when they had 50,000 people and a really poor flow around the site. The D-Ring at the main stage was introduced after some really dangerous crowd surges when (ugh) Limp Bizkit played, and it has prevented a repeat of that.

Bet those who went to town will have lifelong memories. The accident on Fanshawe street was very unfortunate, and I do think lower Queen Street should have been closed for traffic, but the incidents everyone is hand wringing over are small in number, if not in media coverage.

More downtown streets should have been closed as part of the original plan -- there just wasn't enough standing room for 200,000 people -- and I think part of Quay St should be turned into a plaza sooner rather than later.

But you're right. Many more people had a great time than had a very bad one. And despite a degree of chaos, there was no rioting or anything.
