I think it’s the other way around, actually. Friday was extraordinary. Had it been a normal afternoon; cool, overcast, and slightly wet, many fewer people would have been inclined to head in and join festivities. Today, we show the visitors what Auckland is really like.
I beg to differ. It was actually typical of the bouts of early-Spring weather that every year make Aucklanders speculate that it's going to be a brilliant summer. So it's not actually atypical weather, just a bloody lottery.

The “Authorities”, on the other hand, found it necessary to close entire roads so that people could cross, because… well, people are well known for ploughing into crowds at high speed or throwing themselves under cars in an effort to “reach the other side” aren’t they?.
Well, actually, six people crossing Fanshawe Street were hospitalised after being hit by a bus that bounced off a car early in the evening. There were so many people in the CBD that it was simply prudent to close some streets to traffic.

Here's Part 1 on YouTube:
And Part 2
No sign of the Extra segment, even though we've emphasised its importance to the people who do the video.

From Australia I can stream the main two segments of Episode 5. When I try to stream the Media 7 Extra segment, though, the website tells me it’s only available in New Zealand due to international rights agreements. Is this intended or has TVNZ mixed something up?
I asked them to fix this as soon as I became aware of it on Friday. I'm getting a bit tired of it, to be honest.

Thanks for the tip. Unless I’m missing something though, the RSS feed hasn’t included the Extra segment. Only parts 1 and 2 of the main show. Oh well.
Sigh ...

Russell,
Nicky Hagar was nonplussed?
It would be fair to say he was.
Nonplussed means confused and bewildered to the point of inaction. However, almost every time I’ve seen/heard it used in the last decade the writer/speaker means unconcerned or unfazed. A word turns into its own antonym.
I know what the word means. Nicky genuinely didn't know what to say about the Wikileaks debacle -- he couldn't understand what had happened there.

Hands up who is glad the weather on Friday wasn’t like this?
Totally. This front has been forecast to hit Auckland on Sunday morning for days now, so everyone involved with Friday's events has been able to stare at the bullet they dodged,

But in the end it was a massive ask for them to beat England, and I think the most telling factor in the end was physical condition. The English played bruising rugby, and I don’t grudge them their style. But Argentina taught them to run the ball.
It was still only England who could score a try, though. Argentina deserved to win, but they couldn't put it away.

I have a dozen ideas for a blog post about all this swimming around in my head, but it's too nice a day for that.
It was an amazing day for Auckland and although some people had the worst of times, a great many Aucklanders had the best of times too.
