Well, we could all pretend I meant ‘waste’ as in ‘what a waste to use it in that daft campaign in the first place, when it could instead be put to a better use leading a revamped Hero Parade along K Road’.
Good point. It's actually a shame someone didn't seek an expression from gay Auckland. There are many more big, brown, buff gay boys playing rugby here than is generally acknowledged.
It will be interesting to see how Family and Urge go during the RWC. The latter is/was actually co-owned by a sports media professional.

It seated (permanently) 77000! When a game was on the towns were empty.
Amazing. The scale of college football is hard to believe sometimes.

Holy shit!
Having dissed The Cloud, I now feel bound to point out that I'll be getting down there for a bunch of the free entertainment -- Pitch Black, P Money, Sola Rosa, Nick Dwyer, etc. Subject to weather, those nights look like a lot of fun.
From media reports, I'd formed the impression that it was wall-to-wall Feelers and OpShop at Queen's Wharf. Delight to discover otherwise.

Whoops – another tweet :)
It wasn’t aimed at you, I promise
Oh, never for a second thought it was. Just ticking things off my mental checklist.
Made a lot of progress on my LATE at the Museum for October this week, and I think I'll have the Great Blend videos and Public Address Radio live performances in place for tomorrow. I'm definitely winning.

I can’t remember (gee, I wonder why) what my effort in that particular competition was, but i remember being miffed that you won.
To be fair, I may have been remarkably pleased with myself for doing so.

It’s a pleasant novelty hearing sport discussed by people who can form complex sentences.
Hey, you witnessed a Dropkicks podcast, it’s not the first time you’ve seen that
Ahem – I was in one. And I consider my impromptu Sarah Ulmer haiku a career highlight:
Sweet Sarah Ulmer
The nation; the siren calls
Oh truly, she’s cuteIt is the third Google result for “Sarah Ulmer haiku”, but the other two do not actually involve haiku at all.

Which one is he?
The one in his undies.

My tweet – I can’t speak for others – was a reaction to the endless barracking in the media, face to face and elsewhere I faced about the size of this in international terms when back in NZ. It’s disinformation – untrue even. It made no qualitative judgements about our unique national fervor.
Fair enough. It was just startling when my (no, really) innocent expression of looking forward to the party got effectively the same response from several different people.
I promise to tread more lightly when discussing the hallowed 90 mins in future.
Nah.
ETA: that fucking cloud thing still ranks as one of the ugliest buildings I’ve ever seen, not having had the displeasure until last month.
It's unbelievably ugly. It really is like everything McCully touches turns to shit.
On a harbour like ours too.
We do have the Wynyard development, which isn't a world-beater but is good and hugely welcome and encouraging. I cringed when the Prime Minister welcomed it by observing that it might one day rival Sydney.
No. It's Auckland trying to be Auckland -- not trying to be Sydney. That's the point.
PS: Will get on to that email for you soonest. I've been juggling a few things you'll see on the blog tomorrow ...

Hard News: Is that it?, in reply to
Couldn’t agree more. And along the lines of A Day Without a Mexican, I must report than an Italian journalist tried the same experiment last year. It was edifying. Turns out amongst other things that immigrant labour contributes to the our GDP as much as tourism.
A friend of mine used to have a small commercial cleaning business. The only people who'd do the work for what he could pay were immigrants and young men with marginal lifestyles. He was decent to them, but everyone was a contractor and it wasn't the sort of business that's very visible to the statisticians. The workers were also quite estranged from local news and public affairs. A nice group to have a beer with, though.

Is there anything planned in terms of alternative commentary to the games themselves (you know, something a comedic bent that one switches on after having muted the telly)?
Yup. Jedeye is back.
