  • Legal Beagle: Crowdsourcing the referendum, in reply to BenWilson,

I’m happy to lend a hand, Graeme. Let me know what’s required, I’ll tell you if I can work out how to do it.

Your logic fu would fit right in. I will bust out big bags of beans from Eden Coffee for all Graeme’s helpers.

  • Hard News: London's Burning, in reply to giovanni tiso,

but in London, Manchester/Salford, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham—the cities that erupted on Monday 8th August—the rich live, by and large, next to the poor: £1,000,000 Georgian terraces next to estates with some of the deepest poverty in the EU.

I’m not quite clear on what his point is, but this is an accurate description of where I used to live. Fentiman Road in South Lambeth has long been a chi-chi place for up-and-coming Tory MPs to settle. Here’s a Victorian terrace on the market for £1.35 million.

It runs past the “good” side of the council estate I lived on, and is only about 500 metres from the “bad” side, across Dorset Road – a place I actively avoided walking, because it was subject to the oversight of a couple of pretty nasty gangs and simply wasn’t safe. Heroin was sold on street corners. Go figure.

  • Hard News: Is that it?, in reply to Bart Janssen,

It just seems like a very confused policy, do they even know what they are trying to do themselves or just trying to make soundbites?

Sadly, my impression is that it's the latter.

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie, in reply to Hilary Stace,

No charges for Sunday programme. I’m keeping this thread updated till there is some resolution for Arie, and also for archival purposes.

And Inspector Erasmus hasn’t even been able to explain what law Sunday might have broken in the first place. It was just a clumsy attempt to bully the programme – and a waste of taxpayers’ money.

More injustice from the case has now been revealed. Michael and Arie were banned from seeing each other.

I wonder if it will dawn on the oafs at the Christchurch police just what damage their attempts at butt-covering have caused to the lives of others.

On a more positive note, great to see the articulate James Brown and the Brown house on Attitude this morning

Oh yes! We've recorded it but haven't watched it yet. Jim seems to have been a bit of a star for them.

The show's repeated on TVNZ 7 at 5.30pm Thursday and 8.30am and 11.30pm Friday if anyone else is interested.

Attitude also came and talked to me this week about being a disability dad. They got some shots of Jim showing me his just-finished short film 'Me and Asperger's'.

    That's here:

I think it demonstrates the value placed on a sense of humor in our family :-)

  • Hard News: London's Burning, in reply to Rich Lock,

I know the Walworth road pretty well: I used to live at the Camberwell end and my girlfriend (now wife) at the Elephant end.

I lived (i.e.: squatted) on Rockingham Estate in the Elephant, and briefly in a little estate just off the Walworth Road, with a mad Italian Manc called Tony.

Remember Pizza Castello? Their 75p garlic pizza bread sustained me through some lean weeks.

I’d like to note belatedly that if you start liveblogging the apocalypse again I will be inventing a Fingers in Ears Lalalalala Machine and utilising it quick smart. Bloody dystopians.

I believe your presence is required over at today’s ladies thread, which is guaranteed apocalypse-free.
