  • Field Theory: 65 bottles of beer on the wall..., in reply to Islander,

I mean, I love all 3 but the chances of it helping the local economy (=tourism) arnt great- and I doubt it’s going to do much for ’bait either.

But it might be, y'know, a fun and interesting look at an important part of the Coast's culture?

Anyway, here's the page for it.

I'm fairly sure the Coast is on the itinerary for the New Zealand on Screen caravan too.

  • Field Theory: 65 bottles of beer on the wall..., in reply to giovanni tiso,

Of course it won’t. On the other hand you seem to have a vision of a wonderful multicultural festival full of art and lore which I suspect won’t eventuate either.

    Er, it has:

    http://realnzfestival.com/home/

Events all over the country, funded by the Lotteries Commission.

I suppose I'm a bit biased, in that NZ On Screen was one of the bigger grant receipients, for the New Zealand On Screen interactive installations in Wellington and Auckland. A caravan converted as a screening room will tour the South Island too, showing heritage screen material. It's pretty cool.

  • Field Theory: 65 bottles of beer on the wall..., in reply to tussock,

Grrrr. Rugby has cost the public of Dunedin (and the wider Otago) over $200,000,000.00 recently in benefit of a bankrupt professional sports team in action. It was bad when they were costing us a million a year in "forgiven debts", and more to the Otago and Southland teams. A thousand dollars a head, including the kids.

Can't argue with you there. I'm more thinking of the people who have convinced themselves that the country will somehow be hell on earth for a couple of months. It won't.

I, for one, am sick of being told I should be excited by the RWC.

I'd settle for everyone holding back on whingeing about it till it starts and there's something to whinge about.

  • Speaker: John and Phil meet Bob,

The only report so far from the conference is Key saying he would support another look at the law on euthanasia -- without, of course, saying whether it should be changed or how he'd vote on a bill.

The report says nothing about whether the comments were in his speech or in response to a question, but they look like the latter.

  • Speaker: John and Phil meet Bob, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Oooh, give Phil a cookie for stating the fucking obvious.

Oh, whatever, Craig. “The obvious” was rather more than the Prime Minister managed.

For goodness sake, Key’s big promise from the stage at that event was that his government wouldn’t take away any rights that LGBT people already enjoyed.

And then in an interview immediately afterwards he refused to confirm that he would vote in line with even the miserable promise he had just made to the crowd. It was either gutless or amazingly arrogant.

I find myself completely unable to draw an equivalence between the two leaders’ positions there.

  • Speaker: John and Phil meet Bob, in reply to Craig Young,

For all Key’s Cameronisms, does he?

Key voted against the Civil Union Bill.

And in February this year, he was asked at the Big Gay Out whether he would still do so -- and when pressed on it by Steven Oates would only say that we'd have to read his fucking book to find out.

If Key does have any moral convictions, it's unclear what they are. I find him quite depressing sometimes.

How many times have I heard people declare they'll be out of the country for the RWC?

    To which I must say:

    1. No, I bet you won't be.

    2. Why go overseas when there will be tens of thousands of foreign folk coming here, not to mention a whole slate of festivals and events, all around the country? No one's going to make you watch the game on television, ffs.
