And there’s also a time to make sure that brain-mouth filter is in good working order. I may internally cringe every time I see a woman wearing hijab – but I also need to STFU and respect the (presumed) agency and freedom of the women involved.
Oh hell yes. And there are also hijabs that look pretty fly, and are intended to be so.
It’s very easy to be “tolerant” of people who look and think and behave the way you do; the real test of liberal values is being tolerant of those who don’t.
I for one simply dread the future in which you have renounced all bitchiness :-)

Now that we all seem to agree the obvious: that no woman contributes to her own rape by what she takes out of the wardrobe on a Friday night, we might want wonder about where we do draw the line on human responses.
Personally, I think we should cling to the right to think someone’s else’s dress – male or female – is tacky, tasteless or inappropriate, and perhaps even to say so to our companions. Jesus, we make small cultural judgements about each other every day – and may in turn be judged by what we say.
If I see a bunch of suits out on the town, their dress usually signals to me that they’re dorks before their behaviour does. And when I see drunk young women at the Viaduct falling over in their heels and handkerchief dresses (pick a Friday night, any Friday night), my response is always the same.
1. I’m amused by the spectacle.
2/ I hope someone’s looking out for them that evening.

Well, it’ll continue to be polite, there’ll just be lots of concern trolling and mansplaining. But hopefully not. I’d like to think it’ll better at PAS.
Me too. It does feel a bit in the discussion that people are being sort of dared to come in and do that, which possibly isn't the best approach.

Seeing Shane Jones there was… dispiriting in the extreme.
Not just there, but paying tribute. Ugh. Ugh.

Well alright, not quite. In order to be as inclusive and inoffensive as we possibly could, we’d all stay home and do nothing.
Zing!

Somewhat off topic, but I thought everybody might enjoy some beautiful pre-quake-Chch porn. It makes Chch look like a toy ideal city. I hope we can make it even better than this, one day.
That is amazing.

Hard News: Cheer Germ, in reply to
but the PILOT Magazine Russell speaks of is in fact, this one:
Duh. A link might have been handy there, right?
Anyway, thanks again: I’m really enjoying the book this weekend, because I can’t do much else – including get much more than iced water down my strep-ravaged throat.
I was sitting there with the iPad this morning, putting down the book occasionally and dialling up that or that YouTube clip.
Including the 1981 20/20 report on the new rap craze, and its roots. Produced by Danny Schecter(!) and still a great watch.
Part 1
Part 2
One thing to watch for: in the video for Blondie’s 'Rapture', the DJ is not in fact Grandmaster Flash, but Jean-Michel Basquiat. Flash didn’t show up on the day.

Hey, this is nice.
On the Guardian website, Alexei Sayle presents London by bike.

In Auckland, I think drivers' awareness of cyclists has actually improved since last year's cycling deaths made safety an issue. It's a grim reason for it to happen, but I do feel like drivers see me better now.

That said, what Jack said about dedicated cycling clothing being more comfortable for longer rides is 100% correct. People who cycle longer distances for exercise and recreation aren't wearing it to annoy you, just as people who wear running shoes to go jogging aren't trying to frighten off people who are running to catch a bus.
I cycle for exercise (ideally, combined with transport to places I need to get to, but not always) and I'm glad I got over any squeamishness about cyclewear. Lycra and similar fabrics are really comfortable on a bike, in summer and winter.
