  • Hard News: People Take Drugs, in reply to mildgreens,

meth is a drug delivery system, just as crack is to cocaine, smack to heroin and (to a lesser degree) hashish is to cannabis. Meth is metabolised into amphetamine by the host.

Smack and heroin are exactly the same thing.

Crack is the free base form – as opposed to the salt form – of cocaine hydrochloride, and there’s actually a chemical process involved in making one into the other. The effects, albeit largely because of the delivery method, are very different.

By contrast, powder speed in the NZ market will generally just be pure meth cut 1/10 with glucose.

But … … amphetamine sulphate, dextroamphetamine and methamphetamine aren’t the same thing, and it does appear that meth is associated with more harm than other amphetamines.

Ah, was bopping around to this a a nipper...

Fantastic little pop song. Loxene Golden Disc finalist, 1972. As a member of the Shevelles, Rangi Parker had a pretty decent career outside NZ too.

And now for something completely different: 25 Abandoned Yugoslavia Monuments that look like they're from the Future (via Jamie Dubs.)

Seen it before, never mind seeing it again. It is well trippy.

  • Hard News: Friday Fever,

    Only just noticed this.

It’s a dub of one of the worst songs ever – Foreigner’s ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’ -- and it’s actually really, really nice.

In an eerie thematic parallel with Home Brew...

That's quite possibly the first (and only?) time anyone has dared type that phrase.

It certainly amused me to do so.

  • Hard News: Budget 2011: While you wait, in reply to giovanni tiso,

And it wasn’t the day for offering concrete policy alternatives – sometimes you just have to make the point that the government’s recipe is bankrupt and leave it there.

I think David Cunliffe's point that you can't present an alternative without knowing what the numbers are is entirely valid.

Also, I think Labour should hire someone to take the graphs Cunliffe has been posting at Red Alert and work them into a killer Keynote presentation for him to deliver to as many roomfuls of people as he can. I regard Cunliffe's recent efforts in arguing from evidence as a rather cheering development for the Labour Party.

  • OnPoint: Budget 2011: A Credible Path to…, in reply to Sacha,

That’s rather than removing the recent personal tax cuts from the wealthiest, or reversing massive ETS subsidies to farmers and truckies. All choices, no matter what English, Joyce and Key might want voters to believe.

When you put it that way, it sounds like a rather poor show.

  • Southerly: That CERA Rumour, in reply to Lilith __,

I have a relative who’s just moved to Torbay. Hitherto I’d had no reason to go futher up the North Shore than Birkenhead, and I was *staggered* at how it goes on and on and on and on! Not that it’s not nice, leafy and with pretty beaches and all…but so much of it!

The southeast is the same, but without the benefit of leaves and beaches.

I like Birkenhead though. It's where all the gays who couldn't afford to buy in Ponsonby seem to have decamped. So to speak.

It’s horrible. Great, big, soulless houses plunked in the middle of teeny-tiny sections

Te Atatu Peninsula these is an odd mix of cheaper 50-60s houses to the west and blank 90s-00s McMansions looking back toward the harbour bridge. Quite a lot of soullessness there.
