Speaking of buying mp3s, I tried to buy an mp3-only album on Amazon yesterday and was informed that it was only available to US customers.

    What's up with that?

I really wish the major labels could get their shit sorted on regional licensing.

One of my favorite Hunter's memories was them encoring at the Powerstation with the Saints Aussie classic " Know your Product"....brass section at full blast. Sensational !

    OMG. I'd forgotten that!

'Know Your Product' is, as I have noted here previously, one of the greatest rock 'n' roll songs ever. IMHO.

Plus, Russell did just score me sweet concert tickets.

Just to make your day, I should note that Shayne emailed me to say your comment was "really quite perceptive. stuff i'd never really considered/thought myself but probably actually quite on the money."

Thanks for everything, Russell. (Also, my Mum has a huge crush on you).

    Aw, nice. Usually's it's someone's nana.

So buying a game through Steam takes planning and foresight and a close eye on the download speed and meter, so I can pause it when we’re close to 2Gb and the resume it the next day. It annoys me.

    I can see why!

I’ve just given up a Wired Country account that I’d been running alongside the DSL because it had the magic attribute of the ISP being unable to measure the traffic properly. But it didn’t make sense financially and at 3Mbit/s, it was looking a bit slow, so I cancelled that and upped our Telecom DSL cap to 80GB.

Unfortunately, just after I did that – and after I’d told the boys to do any big downloads on Wired Country while we had it – they went and got Dragon Age and the both the Mac and Windows clients for Portal 2, knocking out more than half the new cap in one go. We soon went over and, unfortunately, the 80GB cap came on a different account type which had throttling rather than overage charges.

I was quite an unhappy father for a while there.

first time I’ve tried to do this. I’m a total computer noob

You nearly got it. It just needs to have the "http://" part in order to embed. Fixed now.

The thing that annoys me about the copyright "debate" is the automatic assumption on the part of the representatives of the rights holders that every (illegal) download of an mp3 is a lost sale. I have bought WAY more CDs than I ever would have had I never downloaded a single mp3.

Yeah, me too. The internet revived and reinvented my relationship with music.

    * I should clarify, I have downloaded three PC games in my time. Two of them, I downloaded free copies of because the publishers offered no demo versions and I didn’t know enough about the games to want to invest without trying them out.

My younger boy downloads the odd vintage game too – lord knows the household spends enough on new ones – but we discuss it, and I’m glad that he knows there’s a discussion to be had.

I think Steam deserves a lot of credit for making it possible to buy and use games in a reasonable fashion.
