Russell lets loose a monster upon the world but, in the end, it all reverts back to bleeding discussions about coffee!

Yeah, they had a few words about that in that Standard thread. Sure sign of the feckless middle-class elite, apparently. Just a short black before I'm put up against the wall, please.

  • Hard News: The Thread, It Is Open, in reply to Hilary Stace,

I know you guys don’t much like the Standard

I like Leigh and I think The Standard can play a useful role, but it was depressing reading a post about the de-funding of TVNZ 7 and seeing sneering comments about how I'd be too much of a lackey of the boss class to comment on it (ironically, I had already written a blog post about the issue) -- and that was from one of the regular bloggers. In the context of me potentially losing my job, that seemed tasteless and nasty, and it seemed to be gaining steam after I gently pointed out that I had indeed already commented on the issue.

I really don't have time for people who act like that.

  • Hard News: What Now?,

I've opened a thread should people want to talk about stuff not otherwise covered by currently active discussions:

    Asperger’s sufferers

Chris, I've lived with autism in the family for 20 years, and you will never convince me to use that as a default term.

To take up Sacha's point, I also suspect the de-medicalising of "Aspie" will be a good thing, if it frees up the word for cultural purposes.

  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Christopher Dempsey,

However, dis-abled (meaning something less than 100% able) people have a hard time getting their head around the concept of differently-abled, ingrained as people are with the term.

It doesn't roll off the tongue, though. It sounds awkward and self-conscious to me, although it's clearly the right way to think about it.

    Um ... diffabled?

    Diffability?

  • Hard News: The digital switch-off, in reply to Tom Semmens,

What is the difference between a loan and a deferred payment?

    Not all that much, really.

Tbh, I think it's the right move. It wouldn't make sense to kill off Mediaworks by demanding immediate payment.

Even though Mediaworks' problem is basically that it was acquired by a greedy, stupid private equity firm.

But it would be nice to see the government treat public broadcasting assets as kindly as it treats the private ones.

  • Hard News: About Arie,

We’ve discussed this hereabouts before, but the form of words identifying ASD people is interesting.

I’ve always preferred say say people are autistic or Aspergers, rather than that they have it, which sounds too much like an affliction, rather than a core element of identity.

David Cohen uses the noun “autist”, which I quite like, but it sounds way better when he says it than when I do.

If you’re autie and you know it, flap your hands.

    Boom!

Can that really be the first time that joke has been made?
