Hard News: The First Draft, in reply to
Russell, have got info that shows it to be a hoax? There have been a couple of further mentions on the blog but definitive either way. The story seems to be generally accepted there though.
As Gio pointed out to me, the times don’t fit: why wasn’t a teenager at school rather than out walking with her friends, why were her parents and both brothers at home? Why was there no specific reference to place? Wouldn’t the bereaved girl have been with friends or family, rather than in a place for “lost people”?
It tends to suggest something written outside New Zealand.

On a related note, I'd be very pleased if someone could let me know how Christchurch's various cultural and creative organisations have fared.
I have a funding-raising idea, and it would be useful to know which trusts etc are most in need of help.

Meanwhile, I just read a Kiwiblog earthquake thread for the first time since Tuesday. Really should not have.

We’re going to have to have a major national conversation about the kind of society we want and the kind of investments we are prepared to make in order to have it, and it will involve a fundamental rethinking of what we mean by welfare and ecology.
Well, I hope we have that conversation.

The trouble is, a lot of Christchurch’s charm comes from its old buildings. But you can’t build new old buildings. Any attempt to build ye olde Christchurch is going to look awful. So the trick is to find a 2011 style that melds with Christchurch’s existing charms.
I think the art gallery offers an example in more than one way. There was conservative outrage when that was built, but I don't think anyone sees it as anything other than an asset now.

if Auckland is under-performing economically, as repeatedly alleged by our PM and Minister of Finance, why would you restrict funding to the one part of the country that can truly make a difference to the tax income to pay for the recovery?
Precisely.

Righto: by popular demand -- well, Sacha -- here's a new thread where the politics and economics can be hammered out without getting in the road of the telling of stories and sharing of feelings.

I’m amazed – and impressed – that Radio New Zealand hasn’t even thought to mention that its staff have no access to their premises in Christchurch.
The building was evacuated on Tuesday and they haven’t been able to get back in. Staff have been working from a motel.
They have CCTV pics of some parts of the building, where equipment appears to be in working order.
But worryingly, there are no CCTV pics of the Sound Archives office, and they have no real idea of the state of things there.
Please, please let the archives be safe.

Thanks for reminding me to get it off itunes.
Nooo!!
Buy it direct from Amanda via Bandcamp, where she lets you name your price and most of it goes to her.
ETA: SteveH, snap.

Damn. The big aftershock earlier has damaged Radio New Zealand House, home to Sound Archives. They’re in a temporary base. No one’s allowed in to see the extent of the damage.
ETA: Okay, damage was done on Tuesday, not in the aftershock.
