It's also worth noting that Whitcoull's has private equity owners.

I don't know the back-story here -- anyone here who does? I'd be interested -- but it looks like yet another example of how fucked the private equity model is.

Is this another case of a successfully trading company being wrecked by debt loaded in by private equity owners?

Thanks for acting so swiftly with this post, Craig. You're a trooper.

My brief dabble in independent book publishing certainly didn't leave me with a good impression of Whitcoulls. When Great New Zealand Argument launched, Whitcoulls' copies hadn't left the Warehouse and later we started getting direct sales requests from regional branches because they couldn't get the books from their own head office. It was absurd.

Unity, on the other hand, were great.

I wonder what the total exposure on vouchers is. Saying "we can't redeem vouchers until things are sorted out" would have been better than trying to force people to spend cash on top to redeem them.

    Hi!

I was going to offer a bit of an admonition thing about us being unkind to each other, but things seem to be working out. Meanwhile, here's Sarah Daniell's awesome interview with John Campell about being the only guy in the village at VUW gender studies:

Also, Amanda Palmer totally put her foot on my chair and dominated me this evening. And sang. Man, she has a voice.

  • Up Front: Say When, in reply to giovanni tiso,

Gio, Steven has written similar things here before, and I don't think he'll mind me saying that it's not born of theory or evidence, but extremely traumatic personal experience. I'd just ask you and others to bear that in mind in your responses. Ta.

Lord, can't leave this alone now ... what got me was seeing someone who talks endlessly about power relationships so obviously power-tripping with the assistance of the same damn rhetoric.

Danielle, forgive me: I spent thousands of dollars upgrading a website that now won't let me select text on my iPad (fix coming) so I can't quote you, but yeah, I know that reasonable people make up the overwhelming majority of feminists. It's sorta what I was trying to say.

But when the people who most aggressively and passionately claim the word say and do things that seem wrong to me (and, I must confess, when they perform torture on language to do so), it does seem reasonable to say "not that sort of feminism".

FWIW, my mental framing wasn't "this is what feminism is like" -- it was "I've seen enough internet discussions in the last 18 years to have an idea what's going on here."

  • Up Front: Say When,

Count me in the "I support feminism, not sure if I can call myself one" camp.

For the reasons cited by George and Gio, but also because ... which feminism?

I found the recent post by Maia on The Hand Mirror -- which some of us have been discussing elsewhere -- somewhat disturbing. It was replete with feminist language, but really, it was more an act of bullying dressed up with some doctrinal bamboozling. The way women in the comments who suggested as much -- and these are sufficiently serious women to have identified with a feminist collective -- were rounded on was depressing.

I'm also aware that women I know and love have been treated similarly in the past -- or, at the least, been patronised into the ground by their ideological betters. And I think, I don't want no part of that feminism.

    My $0.05 worth.

What should I do? Close the thread? Make Keith write another one? Suggest to Dexter that he's made his point, repeatedly?
