the existence of licensed premises doesn't seem to have made it much harder for them to drink tho (but obviously prohibition is still not the best solution)

I was thinking of having to purchase and smoke on licensed premises. If you remove 90% of the demand for the black market, you'd come close to killing it.

In saying that, it would be great to have open drug education that got the message out that there is an age related risk for cannabis related pychosis, so hold off till you are 18. And that smoking weed at 16 is not good at all considering the brain is still developing etc.

That's one of my biggest frustrations about prohibition. A sensible legalisation (say available in licensed premises) would make it much harder for the people health research tells us shouldn't be smoking drugs (youth) to do so, because the black market would largely disappear.

  • Field Theory: In the middle of the night,

It would seem wrong to get the kids up to watch a laptop

Surely the advantage of our modern world is that you can get up at 7am, ignore the outside world for about two hours, and watch it delayed having recorded it off the internet (or whatever).

How many people are going to get the result spoiled at 5am while they are asleep, after all?

  • Hard News: How Lovely,

Russell, I urge you to indeed see Street Chant at your earliest opportunity.

Everyone tells me while the 3Ds were good, Street Chant blew them off the stage as the intro act.

I expect more arrests were made than necessary , but I suspect the main focus wasn't the shop assistants ...

It is the tendency when widespread raids take place to arrest all in one swoop, and then as things become clearer drop some charges or downgrade them and focus on the 'big cheeses'. It's unfortunate but it's impossible for the police to know all the details before the arrest.

If it's of that nature and they've arrested people who have committed a crime, and they're now sorting out where people are in relation to charges, that's OK.

If it's arresting everyone working at the place, even the cleaner and the shop assistant who didn't do anything, that's a problem.

  • Cracker: Hands in the Middle....,

It also wants to ban...all-you-can-drink "open bar" evenings at French high schools.

Here we call those "The After Ball", and schools threaten to cancel your ball if they go ahead.

(All you can drink open bar evenings at school? That doesn't sound like part of a healthy alcohol culture...)

  • Up Front: Boobs!,

Unfortunately for you, I live *actually next door* to my mother, so if we're going to do the Embarrassing Class Photo-Off, I am Quick-Draw McGraw and you're Shit Out of Luck McGee. ;)

Wait, you live next door to your mother and that's unfortunate for *me*?

Wow....Um, pics or it didn't etc.

I may have class photos at my parent's house in Wellington as evidence.

However I'm not bringing them out as Danielle might have the same photos with me in them.

  • Cracker: Hands in the Middle....,

One suspects the closing time says a lot about social expectations about times of the day it is OK to drink. After 12 noon, until say 4am. Once it's 5am, early risers are starting to get up and it's actually morning (as compared to 3am, which is still 'last night'), no more of that thanks.

I would have presumed that most people still partying at 6am are on something different than alcohol. Drug most guaranteed to make you tired, surely?
