Oh bugger. I was hoping for an improvement on that score.
I only saw Eagle vs Shark recently (I think it was on TV?), and I found it boring and tedious. The ungainly lead characters just annoyed me, rather than entertained.
I do wonder if it would have been better if it had been told about two young people: 10 - 12 year olds. Rather than two adults who seemed to act that way.

I think Jeremy Clarkson is a world-class fuckwit, and yet still I am compelled to watch.
I think some of the time he's an idiot, but I find him very funny. He reminds me of a friend of mine who is also into cars, in his humour and mannerisms.
For what it is (a boys yobo car show), I think Top Gear is tremendously well done. They manage to get entirely non-car people to watch, while still conveying car type information.

On another day the Lord Jesus went out into the road, and saw the boys that had come together to play, and followed them; but the boys hid themselves from Him. The Lord Jesus, therefore, having come to the door of a certain house, and seen some women standing there, asked them where the boys had gone
I haven't read much of the bible at all. How many sections make Jesus look like a Catholic priest trolling for nookie?
But .. but .. there are also legions of non-religious people who do these things too, for non-religious reasons.
Like David, I'm entirely happy with the 90% or so people who are religious and just getting on with being good people. If they get there via believing in god, as long as that belief doesn't cause harm in other areas, that's great.
For the non-religious, who get there via some other moral system, that's also great.

that means projects have to prove their value before they get funded (which if you think about it is daft)
Well not necessarily. Research is often multi-staged over time, so a researcher might get a small grant or some time to explore something, and then once it looks promising might go for a larger grant to do a three year study on it to turn it into reality.
There isn't a lot of money going around so most of what there is has to go towards stuff that looks likely to work. Marsden funds are the exception, they go towards blue sky research which may or may not produce something valuable at the end.

I'd be surprised if you could not also get it using the same dish on your roof plugged into a satellite freeview decoder...
That's what the TV technician did when my partner got him around to look at our terrible aerial reception - sold her a freeview decoder and plugged it straight into the (not being used) sky dish.

Oh, and TVNZ on demand, why bother? What's the point of
"I Demand Crap Right Now"?The various bloggers at PA who have TVNZ shows are no doubt not offended at all.

The lecture today by the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor, Professor Sir Peter Gluckman was bracing.
I've only seen him on TV a couple of times, and quoted in the media a few more, but he seems like a good appointment, saying the right things, and I hope he has the ear of the PM. It would be good to see his conclusions being backed up with more clout.
-
I think Nick Smith might have got an interesting phone call from the PM after that got aired.

Ha. My theory is that it is part of the process of gaining your PhD. Probably something in the pin cushion hats that affects the brain and removes basic technical competencies.

Scientists are only human, they are subject to vainty and corruption like anyone else, and there is more money on the AGW gravy train for scientists, politicians and business people than any gravy train around.
I love this scientific conspiracy theory. You only have to meet two scientists holding a PhD to discover that they couldn't run a global conspiracy between two of them on this scale, let alone thousands of scientists all over the world.
Half of them will have left their original data on the train one day and the other half will have accidentally emailed it to their mother rather than their co-author. Then the IT guy will have been called in to rescue it when they forgot where they saved it, and they'll have 20 copies each on their computer and CDs and memory sticks, each with sensible names like "weather data 2 john checked.xls copy 5". They'll wander around campus peering closely as data sheets because they've forgotten their glasses are on their head muttering about complex math modelling loud enough for 50 people to hear them.
Gravy train :P
