It's just never going to work though. From a logistical point of view it would be a diabolical nightmare. It's not an aircraft seating a few hundred with one point of entry. It's a stadium with half a dozen points of entry and if it's a big game with a large walk up crowd (as there would be in this case) you'd have tens of thousands to deal with.

Clearly there would never be tens of thousands of empty seats to fill, you'd only do it on full house games, and it would only be a few hundred tickets. And last time I went to a stadium the ticketing was controlled by bar codes and computers. At a certain time just push a button and it can print off one-off tickets for all the empty seats (or maybe, 90% of them). They already have dozens of staff working to sell the main tickets, this is five minutes extra work for them.

  • Field Theory: Week Eight,

Fact is though that the season ticket holders have bought those tickets.

Hence my suggestion that you'd need to change the nature of the tickets, and discount them a little further.

  • Field Theory: Week Eight,

Exactly. You could reduce the price on your season tickets a little to compensate for the fact that they can't turn up halfway through a game, and still make money on the deal.

Turning people away from a venue where they are empty seats is illogical.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

    Blake's Seven, anyone?

Hear hear. I have very few fond memories of Doctor Who (though I certainly watched a fair bit of the original series), but Blake 7 was a revelation to me when I was about 9 or so.

  • OnPoint: Iraq, from the air,

I really couldn't be arsed commenting in this thread, for the simple reason it seems to me only an idiot could equivocate about whether or not this is an atrocity. However, the waffling going on has driven me to conclude - yet again - that PA is full of fools in love with the sound of their own sophisticated mendacity.

It must be interesting to look at the world only in black and white.

Did you find that strawman in a packet of chips? This is getting irritating.

Oh come on Giovanni. Tom placed all the blame on the soldiers firing the weapons, not the officers who authorised them to fire, not the chain of command above them, the rules of engagement that were written, and the politicians who put them there. It was a pretty crap analysis of an example that we have in front of us of USA military actions in Iraq, and Keith called him on it.

Keith has noted that the 'RPG' was seen after the authorisation to engage, so he's not exactly James Bremner mouthpiece on the matter.

That's quite moronic. More money then sense.

  • Cracker: Hot Cross Words,

As I said, last night I spoke to workers, plural, who would rather work and get the time and a half. It probably betrays my libertarian past, but I believe that their individual wishes are just as valid as that of the NDU, for instance.

I find it strange that the unions are seeking to protect these few stat days, when there's a line in the sand about protecting worker's time that's about four km that way, well and truly crossed years ago.

If protecting workers ability to have time off is that important, then it'd make sense to have it every weekend of the year rather than just the five or so that happen to have stat days. Personally Labour weekend isn't particularly different to me than any other weekend, just longer, but I work Monday to Friday and get stat days off, so its not an issue for me

Individual employment contracts aren't the answer, the power largely sits on one side of that equation. I like the weekend and late night retailing, so I don't think we should go back 30 years, but there must be some sensible ways to give employees a bit more power over when they have to work.

  • Legal Beagle: MMP or not MMP,

I'm confident that won't be the case.

But does the law prevent them from screwing around with other things, like number of MPs between the two systems? That's where they mangled things in 1993.

    Hillsborough

Well I'm not suggesting letting more people into the venue than it can hold. But if a condition of your season ticket is that you turn up within 10 minutes of kickoff, they could then second sell those tickets to walk ups. It seems foolish to have seats empty when you could sell them.

And Hillsborough wasn't a problem of overselling. It was a problem of bad crowd management. Some parts of that ground were half empty at the same time as people were being crushed in another part.

  • Cracker: Hot Cross Words,

@Kyle: I think the point is that the 15/20% is extorionate (or at least, less dramatically, higher than it should be) given that labour is only one factor in the total cost equation. The bacon, lettuce and tomatoes purchased the day before didn't cost them 20% extra, for instance..

Well maybe. It really depends on what the proportion of the business' costs are labour (assuming we're using the time and a half, not the paid day off):

If you would normally spend $100, but the surcharge puts that up to $115, and the labour are being paid time and a half, then the original labour cost of the $100 bill would work out at $30.

    20% surcharge it's $40 originally out of the $100.

    30 - 40% of a restaurant's costs on labour doesn't seem unrealistic to me.

Yes of course they could absorb it, which would be good marketing, but I don't see why people should grumble about paying it.
