The idea that the Left in the last ten years has been too intransigent is just bloody ridicolous, to the point of being offensive. Try 'not nearly intransigent or principled enough'.

I agree with you. But probably in relation to the current two wars in the Middle East, too small in NZ either way. Peace doesn't seem to be a big priority for the left here at present.

  • Field Theory: Week Eight,

I watched the recording on MYSKY last night and there were grey seats fucking EVERYWHERE. Not just the 'oh I'll go for a piss' kind of smatterings, these were clumps of 20 or so in the middle of stands full of people. I was so fucked off.

    Season ticket holders?

I wonder why sports venues don't do like airlines and oversell some events? They must be able to guarantee for a domestic game that some season ticket holders won't turn up and sell an additional couple of hundred tickets five minutes before the game starts.

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

Now, that's the house of representatives, so what does that say about the rest of the country?

Depends what you think of the members of the HOR really ;)

My thought, watching the video, was that with all that wonderful technology and information at their disposal they seemed to be missing only a pair of high-powered binoculars.

I think the video was already put through binoculars. The aircraft taking it probably was a km or so back. Whether or not the voices you hear are using the video to make their decisions, or whether they're using some other equipment, I'm not sure.

  • Hard News: The Internet in New Zealand,

I can't help with telecom, but I've recently changed from vodafone (who certainly do throttle) to slingshot, who don't seem to clamp down on torrents at least. Great speed at the two houses that I've used it at.

  • Field Theory: Week Eight,

It only happens in games that have strict rules about stopping the clock when the ball is not in play. Rugby doesn't have that. Soccer has it even less. I have a feeling the games would last longer if they instituted that rule.

Rugby used to be loose with the final whistle, but now the referee does stop the clock for some things, and the hooter seems go off at a set time. It's my impression that they stop the clock for video referee decisions, significant injuries etc.

I'm not sure why the game went so far over on Friday, were there just no stoppages in play after the hooter? Or was the hooter delayed for some reason?

Keith, I think the actions and the video are pretty bad. Even if it's not 'men with guns go psycho', it's certainly underlying cultural, competence and discipline problems.

The initial coverup and denials are truly damning though. The initial claims were that it was a terror group engaging, which a look at the video, or an honest chat with any of the helicopter gunners would have revealed to be a lie.

There are going to be fuckups in wars, if we insist on having them. At least they could be honest about it rather than being pushed into admitting it.

There is a cosy place in hell for those with PhDs who put Doctor on their Koru Club Cards. The purpose of this is to identify MDs for emergencies.

I don't know about that, but my cousin had this come up as her and her partner were the doctors on a plane from South Africa to Perth when a person became seriously ill.

Interestingly, the doctor is in charge of the plane in the situation, and can direct the captain to land or return. She turned the plane around about an hour into the flight.

All that power and you don't have to do a PhD.

Of course there is a big picture and I have been presenting it. Art is a European construct.

I meant the bigger picture than that, but nevermind.

  • Hard News: A revolting piece of shit,

No, but it doesn't mean it should, either. If you walk into Tarantino's 4th and 5th feature length film expecting substance I guess you have a greater belief in the human animal's capacity for change than I do.

Reservoir Dogs is one of my favourite movies ever. There's a pile of substance in that movie. Fantastically written from the reverse side of the story. Kill Bill was awful IMHO, partially because it was a tribute to awful movies which didn't tend to have substance to start with. I haven't seen his latest, but if it's no good then it seems fairly easy to graph his descent in a linear line from Dogs downwards.

Giovanni, there is a nasty, bitter streak to you, that makes the winning of an argument more important than decency and integrity. You have to suggest that I have darker purposes, to put it about that I must be some sort of racist. You don't have the honesty or the integrity to take on an argument squarely. Of course, you would not refer to any of the academic literature on the subject because it probably would not support your view, so instead you insinuate evil intent on my part.

Whether or not Giovanni is right or not, and whether or not that's actually what he said...

I think for an academic (in training) to assume that there can't be any 'bigger picture' to academia and its output is a bit shortsighted. Throughout history academia and academics have been used for many wider purposes, not all of them good. Academics have to have the vision to keep that always in the back of their mind.
