"You call that dinner?"
"That's not dinner. That's some seaweed wrapped around rice and fish. The Japanese only learnt that this was called dinner once Westerners arrived. They had no concept of the "dinner" until this time."

I left the bordello feeling a little cheated, I felt like I needed 12.5% more.
You'll be up in arms next year when you'll be feeling 15% shortchanged.
Prostitute's clients, they're going to bring the govt down I tell ya.

This is my main gripe as well. While The Feelers are bland, I can understand the NZRU chosing someone innocuous like them. But to deny the opportunity for an NZ songwriter to makecsome dosh is bad planning.
Aye, exactly. And thanks Robyn for posting the 1990 song. That was pretty bad wasn't it?
Shihad's 'Run' seemed like a strange suggestion to me until I rewatched it. How can the NRL not have picked that up for their annual song? That'd be all over a running contact sport advert.

Christ, I vaguely remember the finns song you put in there. Gee that was awful, I wonder if the Feelers will be any worse.
What was the song for the 1990 commonwealth games (I seem to remember there was on)? I remember it was pretty bad but worked out OK in terms of people singing it.

TVNZ is about to be restructured by this Government so those new channels may be about all that's left of 'serious' shows about this country and its people. Swings, roundabouts.
Well that's a bit silly Sacha. "The pie did get bigger, but it might get smaller in the future so nothing has changed."
If you wanted more serious shows on TV, the introduction of TVNZ 6 & 7 seemed like a pretty good development to me.

There was some old guy in Tauranga saying this would bring him out of retirement just this morning. Nice suit, too."
LOL.
What benefit can they possibly believe comes from treating people like criminals?
What frustrates me is that I'd be in favour of welfare reform, particularly in the area of the unemployment benefit. By definition that's supposed to be people who want to work, but who are unable to find work, either through lack of skills or opportunities.
More investment in education and training for those people so that they can engage in work that involves some skills and earning some half-decent money, and a sustained effort by the government to put actual work in front of them, and I wouldn't mind an actual stick being brought out for the minority who actually intend to live off the state with no intention of supporting themselves (as long as the stick didn't involve taking money off them which is going to do the opposite of helping).
The current govt plans, more of the same foolish reforms.

But I don't like censorship, and given that (presumably) the actors in the vid were consenting grownups and no kittens were harmed in the making, etc. then suppressing this vid would be censorship.
I'm not sure if Russell keeping the video off public address is censorship. He's linked to it above. He just doesn't want it hanging on his walls.
And there's probably more people going to find it to see what's offended him so much as a result of him mentioning it than there would be if he hadn't brought it up.

Marcia has an excellent story about Germaine Greer's visit.
You may also be interested in Professor Barbara Brookes' essay in Disputed Histories: Imagining New Zealand's Past, edited by Ballantyne & Moloughney, Otago University Press 2006. She looks at Greer's visit to NZ when she was charged with offensive language, and NZ society at the time.
Should be in the Auckland uni library.

Show me a different pie
The new digital channels make a bigger pie. TVNZ has brought more 'serious' shows to TV.
-
there is limited "social issues" coverage just as there are overall systemic limits.
If you want to look at the pie that way, OK.
