Incidentally, when watching the movie Ali, in which I think Will Smith's pretty bloody good, it occurred to me that someone really should/must make a movie of Hillary's ascent of Everest... surely Peter Jackson's got it on his list?
I suspect that the "Sherpa Tenzing really hauled Hilary up the mountain but the movie didn't show it that way" argument might cause some controversy. (see, U-571).

Firearms licences are cool. You could get one of those.
...
Well firearms licences aren't like that at all. A cop will actually visit the house of those people who agree you should have the licence and talks to them for like 15 minutes.
Which is quite ironic really, given that firearms licence isn't one of the three that various places have to accept as ID, yet it's probably the hardest to get for yourself.

Nice quote in that story:
Mr Leason said the group "broke a law protecting plastic to uphold a law to protect human life".

Enjoying this discussion, which I would like to contribute to but I have had hordes of students scrambling at my door all day.
Well for Christ's sake man. Let them out!

You don't already have a USB port in your neck? Man, Dunedin is really the end of the Earth ...
We're jumping over USB, straight into firewire. There's no way you could watch High Def Young Frankenstien with ancient USB.
Next step, we're just going to plug the new Pacific Fibre straight into our little toes. Dude.

The end of the world is nigh, I'm the last guy on the space capsule and I have an old small USB stick with just one Gb on it and I have to choose between two pirated AVI files on my computer - either Citizen Kane or Young Frankenstein. There is no time to compress them so that they will both fit.
Happy?
Well that's even more silly. What are you going to watch it on if you're leaving your computer behind?
I can see you now. Up in space, by yourself, holding your wee USB stick in front of you. "Man I should have brought a book!"

However did you know that if you filled an olympic pool with custard you could comfortably walk on it? True story.
You crazy Italians!

Citizen Kane wouldn't be my desert island movie either. If I had to pick one, maybe Solaris.
This whole "what would you take to a desert island" thing really doesn't work in the modern world.
Not only are we taking a DVD, but we're also presumably taking a player, a TV, and a magic source of electricity.
And if we've got magic electricity, wouldn't some sort of ham radio make more sense?

Depreciation makes sense and should be applied across the board.
Depreciation makes no sense on property. Depreciation is for assets like cars or computers that you get rid of after X years and replace with a new one. By allowing depreciation on property you are basically saying "run this into the ground and save up all the money in tax credits and use it to buy a new house".
Clearly that's not what investers do with houses, and that's not the signal we should be sending. It doesn't even match what happens with property values, which typically go up, not down. Maintenance is part of the cost of owning rental property, and it's rightly a tax write-off.
I became a property invester on Monday when tenants moved into my old house. The idea that I could depreciate it as a tax credit which I would pay umpteen years later when I finally sell it is nuts and I refuse to entertain such a thought.

So '2012' was big dumb fun. No more, no less. It knew it's place. But Avatar? Well, it's significant, innit? And that Matrix? Deep, man... Made me think about the nature of reality and all that.
I really don't get how the matrix can be seen as a deep movie. Great special effects, good sci fi story, and hell of a lot of good fun to watch. "Ooh, we're all part of something bigger and don't realise it!" was no great revelation.
