Yeah. I still don't think it would be a good event down here. Too much 'stupid' drunk, a la keg party/undie 500 etc, as compared to 'good fun party' drunk.

I know we have rights to certain information, but we also have rights to keep certain information private, don't we?
Can anyone view my daughters school results if they wish, under an official information act request? My understanding is that results like this can be made public, if they can't be used to identify individuals.
So universities will post mark lists, for example, using student numbers rather than names to identify the marks. It's a big no no to post anything that has student numbers and names together.
I think it's important to remember that a big philosophical underpinning of nationalised standards is that it has a market running underneath it. If schools take similar tests, and students at one school are doing better, then people will shift to that school. The 'lesser' school will then have to buck up its game or it will be in trouble.
The two requirements for the system to work is that there is a nationalised standard, and there is 'transparency' so parents and families can make those market decisions. So yes, we are looking ahead at schools putting out promotional material talking about how well they do in national standards, league tables (if the newspapers don't do it, someone will do it privately), etc.
The theory is of course crap, as Hattie points out performance of the school is well down the list of what's causing good results. But that's the theory that underlies what we're looking at.

It wouldn't surprise me if Dunedin put in a competitive bid financially to try and multi-purpose-ise their new stadium.
Even if the date changed (to university orientation), I doubt very much that it would be anywhere near as good. Dunedin would do the drunk well, the dressing up and partying, not so much.

People in Auckland should not bitch about only getting to see them once, as I've wanted to see them for 19 years, and having just bought a second house, I couldn't afford tickets and flights to see what is probably my favourite band. I hope they come back and do either Wellington or Christchurch.
So y'all can shut up :P

I do not see why copyright should be transferable. The rights should belong to the creator and to the creator's heirs, for a reasonable time. They should not be a commodity.
There's hundreds of instances of people writing songs and then selling them to someone else to do the performance. We want people to be able to do that. Not every great song writer is a great performer.
Being able to trade copyrights like shares seems bizarre however.

the "captain is in charge" thing seems to be harking back to days gone by. until the mid-70s, international cricket teams didn't have coaches. they had a captain and a manager, but the manager's job mainly consisted of making sure everyone got on the team bus before it left. in the old days, i'm not sure how common it was to have the captain as a selector, although i don't think it was that unusual.
Yes. But it's very unusual for the modern professional sporting era. No one else is going in this direction are they?

When you look at that photo, and think about test cricket, it does make a mockery of cricket uniforms and colours. There's not really any need for it in the game, it's just cricket getting into the merchandising game isn't it?
The bizarre wheedling around the new coach's position, which doesn't really seem to me to be a coach, but more an advisor, amuses me. In what other sport does the captain have such control over the team relative to the coach? You wouldn't see McCaw picking the team and telling them all what to do while Graham Henry works on technical details with one forward in the corner.

It does not need to be an either/or proposition.... both statements could be true simultaneously.
Look, that's no way to start a "serious debate"!

Oh, it gets better - there are pros and cons, but the govt is re-opening the debate about providing choice of mainstream or segregated education for disabled children.
Obviously I'm getting cynical in my old age, but I'm betting there will be less not more funding going into it at the end of it, whatever other outcomes it leads to.
