Yip this is pure fantasy stuff, but with a precedent.
Also in the 19th century, the English Crown was a little worried that the French might move in on New Zealand. It was one of the reasons that the treaty got signed.
Yet "French taking over New Zealand" is about as likely as your 19th century transported into 21st century USA.

Having read all the cool stuff on other threads (thanks folks) before returning to the scene of the crime, can I note that I started laughing earlier than Emma.
That is possibly my favourite PAS thread ever.
I can just imagine Keith looking at the computer and going "Umm. So about google guys... guys?" while Australia develops a nuclear arsenal to fend off the Chinese immigrant beachhead and NZ votes on whether China or the USA will be our new (best of the worst) overlords. It hasn't even been godwinned yet.
It's like "Public Address has gone completely fucking mad" bingo.
-
If you're claiming any of that has been done by the US to their own citizens on any sort of organised scale than I think you're the one who should be supplying citations.
The game some people are playing of "pick the best of these crappy overlords" seems rather bizarre. Can we go with the third option, "this is a stupid question, didn't Keith try and raise some interesting points about Google in China about 5 pages ago?"

Oh, the sea parts for me and my buddies: that's how much rock 'n' roll we got.
That's not rock 'n' roll. That's whiff of old person. They're hoping you had a sponge bath before you left the home.

'The Death Star response', as it shall now be called (sorry, presumptuous?) seems about right.
Between this and making Emma's top... 15 or whatever it was... I feel I need an engraved plaque. Better not have 'Made in China' on it though!

Kyle's Death Star allegory is keeping me hanging in there, but it's tough.
Only works because of Lucy and her fusion reactor. If we didn't have that pony my death star would just be a fucking big toaster.
-
I was thinking of it more as a marketing strategy - distracting people with the pony to stop them asking questions about how I solved the fusion problem. Everyone likes ponies. Just ask Craig.
A scientist and cunning! You're working for the Chinese aren't you? I can see your slanty eyes now.
WARNING Will Robinson, there is a Chinaman behind the potting shed! whirrrrr... bleep.
Someone get this man a beer.

Anyway, on topic: I'm mildly surprised that most of the arguments in this thread have crystallised around health and harm reduction, rather than practicality.
While I recognise your point, I don't like the argument "we should give up on fighting this wrong, because it's not working". If something is wrong, I'd like to think we'd find alternative ways of dealing with it better.
To me the answer remains, "this isn't as bad as it should be for these laws, nor relative to these other substances" - the 'wrong' is relatively small. Then the side effects of trying to damage the trade in actually bad drugs, get people into treatment where they have problems, tax it, make it less likely that kids will get their hands on it just add additional reasons so that it makes even more sense.

If we had to defend our home islands, then we have considerable advantages - we are surrounded by vast oceans, we have powerful allies, we have quite a strong first world economy. With an efficient Air Force equipped with adequate modern weapons we could hold off anyone short of the United States Navy.
This didn't seem silly to you when you typed it?
If Darth Vader lent us the Death Star we could fry China from space. Even if New Zealand Defence were to lose the plot and blow a couple of billion on a combat wing of fighter bombers, we couldn't hold back any country with an aircraft carrier, or Australia.
Yes, I do happen to think China has an active policy of using migration of pro-Beijing Chinese to create reasons for interventions in other nations internal affairs.
Those damn chinese autobots! Coming here and mining our gold, opening chinese food stores, and filling up our universities while paying full cost! It's an invasion precursor! They're setting up a beachhead!
And if I had a working fusion plant and a pony I could supply clean electricity to the entire country, too.
Does the pony turn the cog on the plant to make the electricity, or do you pack the electricity on its back and deliver it at night to people's houses, kinda like a reverse nightcart?

Galactically vile Christian cleric Pat Robertson told his CBN viewers today that Haitians are "cursed" because their ancestors "swore a pact with the devil" to liberate themselves from the French in 1804. "True story."
Someone needs to drag that piece of dirt down to Haiti and make him dig people's family members out of the rubble, while gagged. What a scum bucket.
