I didn't really get David's complaint that there was some breach of faith in people discussing his blog post here, rather than on his own blog

It does feel like an interesting point worth teasing out though. The nature of internet blogging promotes "hey look at this over here". And on a site like this, that then leads to discussion about what's over there.

Often this discussion might be happening more "here" than "there" because not many theres in NZ have this size community. Indeed, there might be very little posts over there but an extensive discussion taking place here.

Which you could argue is a little unfair to there, in that they've created the content, and PAS is just using it. To what extent do the creators of content deserve the discussion that flows from it?

Not what David was arguing though I suspect.

You've had plenty of chances, and risen to none of them. Again, please leave.

There doesn't seem to be any need to make these sorts of posts. They look weird without the context.

  • Speaker: Rethinking NZ’s Emergency Aid,

Kyle suggested rather than sending money people would rather send themselves.

    Umm, no I didn't.

Kyle Matthews -no, we're not ignoring "a heap of people on the islands who dont have family in NZ." NZ *as a country* provided substantial aid.

The suggestion was to make money available to relatives here.

If that was how the system worked, then people who didn't have relatives here would get none, or substantially less.

The message was "If Rodney can do it", which seems incongruous with what he actually did, which was not finish. It would seem odd if the organisers of a lengthy harbour swim would be happy with people to just give it a go even if (like Rodney) they hadn't trained properly for it.

I've never done any endurance sports but if I did I'd hope people would consider more achievements than just getting across the line. I presume a reasonable number of people fail to finish the various endurance races. That doesn't mean they haven't necessarily achieved success along the way.

  • Speaker: Rethinking NZ’s Emergency Aid,

You know money "flows" to the islands in the form of "remittances". Why then isnt it possible to make money available to relatives here to send via remittances directly to the people. Im sure banks would
co-operate. Any organisation will take a cut, even churches, its a matter of finding the best option.

I would suggest that people who have relatives in New Zealand, possibly working, are probably going to be the ones better off back in the islands, and best able to cope with a disaster.

And two, there's a heap of people on the islands who don't have family in New Zealand. Are we ignoring them?

Sorry for not making it clear, I am assuming Hizbollah to have more than two working braincells and be capable of forward planning.

The alternative to your thesis is that they weren't pre-prepared, and it's just possible that David actually made a valid point.

Opportunity for forward-planning does not necessarily mean it occurs.

Admiring Rodney for giving it a go is a far cry from promoting him in adverts as an example of success, surely.

Given the big personal changes that he's made in his lifestyle and health, and that "you're only worth promoting if you achieve the incredibly hard" is a terrible message to send to society, I'd have to disagree. 'Success' can have more than one measure.

  • Speaker: Rethinking NZ’s Emergency Aid,

They had at least 5 years to plan for a military conflict they would have to concede they were going to lose, so there is absolutely nothing remarkable about the speed with which they were able to offer reconstruction assistance. Such action would have to 100% at the forefront of their thinking even before they launched their rocket attacks.

You've jumped from "had the opportunity to prepare" to "were prepared" without any proof. The fact that Hizbollah knew that a military reaction was likely, isn't proof that they were pre-prepared to deal with the consequences of that reaction on the civilians.

Well 45 years is two generations.

30 years ago you could get a bursary which was almost enough to live on. Only about a third of current students get an equivalent now. The comparison between those who changed the rules in the late 80s and 90s (many of whom got qualifications in the 70s and 80s funded by the taxpayer), and the situation that they put the next generation in, all the while telling that generation that tertiary education was vital... is instructive.
