  • Speaker: The system's pretty good, the…,

I do not deny any of what you say. I am only pointing out that some people have managed to lose significant amounts AND keep it off. I make no claims for this for universality, as I make clear. Neither do I say it makes it easy, which I also make clear.

Peter, I think that given that the discussion is about suggested changes to NZ's public health system, a bit of universality is what we need. A system, or systems, which do work across the population.

And I'm fairly appalled by Penguin's attempt to withdraw permission.

That's a PR cock up. Who ever thought that the Listener would follow that directive, and who didn't say "this will just draw more attention to us, and not of the good sort"?

I also struggle to remember a time he's missed a tackle. Nelson's stats for the 4 northern tour games he played has him missing one tackle. That's reliability you can bank on in the mid-field, and he's a decent attacking player as well.

  • Hard News: The March for Democracy,

If they're not being used for broadcast purposes then i think RB is right about the posters being outlandish , depicting the minarets as missiles .

Even if they were, the sad irony of a country largely made up of Christians (who ring bells on Sunday morning, and other times) being concerned about a different religion making regular noises, would seem just a tad hypocritical.

And y'know, the whole pushing several hundred thousand people into the terrorist box because of their religion.

California is. Several years ago there was a video floating around of Arnie in an electric car made by a bunch of geeks in Silicon Valley called Tesla Motors.

Someone needs to watch the documentary "who killed the electric car", which is set in California.

Peter, your posts are like the script to a horror movie. Zombies ain't scary no more? Come meet this scientist talking about "your children's last days on earth".

    But this must've changed recently.

Yes, I believed it changed recently. I think in Cardiff at 2007 against France we were the home team, so had to change. Now the rule is reversed.

Is it possible that we don't actually like rugby? Probably not. I think we're just annoyed that the game plan we'd like our team to employ is also easily thwarted. And this weekend it wasn't.

I think there's a wider valid point which McCaw commented upon when the English suddenly discovered that maybe they should have supported to ELVs after all. There is no ideal set of rules to govern rugby, but a set of rules that discourages teams from expansive running play, running the ball, taking risks, making exciting play doesn't help the game in front of either current or potential fans. Ice hockey came to this conclusion about six years ago and started to penalised all the holding and crosschecking and hooking that had been preventing talented ice hockey players from showing their true potential on the ice.

In the end, you want to watch a rugby game which has speed, excitement, strength, talent, physical contests. Kicking should be part of that, but the current rules encourage it too much so it'll be good when they adjust it further and come to the conclusion that part of the point of the rules is to push the sport towards events that are entertaining to play in and watch.

That would benefit NZ rugby players, but also France, Australia etc. If it leads to more games like the French one, and less like the English one, that seems to be all good to me.

Nope, what we want to tell you is that if the Tories suddenly discover the joys of electoral reform now, we'll all know damn fine it's utterly unprincipled.

I'm not sure if it applies to UK politics, but both major parties commitment to electoral reform here, a la MMP, was entirely unprincipled, they were dragged into it unhappily.

And they need the private island, see, because now they've got all that 'great renown', they're having to beat the groupies off with a stick.

Island property is also so cheap nowdays, what with all those scares they've put out about rising sea levels. Cunning scientist buggers!
