  • Field Theory: Who won the weekend?,

And yes, TVNZ crosses live to shit all the time, including last night crossing live to a reporter in the TVNZ carpark on Lambton Quay putting groceries in her car.

Was the groceries related to the story, or did they just surprise her doing "a Hone in Paris"?

  • Random Play: All Apologies,

Like you, I have hitherto had a lot of time for him.

I didn't particularly mind when he went off in Australia rather than do the select committee thing. It was rude to his fellow committee members, but at least he did something with the time that I thought came within his job.

Skipping off work to go sightseeing, not so much.

  • Discussion: Uncivil Rights,

The vandalism they performed was symbolic and did not hinder the operation of the spy base. It was an ethical act of protest.

I don't think the action was symbolic at all, it damaged an expensive piece of equipment - the sheath that hides and protects the dish. Wish they'd had a go at the dish themselves myself, that's the sword/spear.

"Did not hinder" implies that this is a requirement for it to be an ethical act of protest, which you clearly don't believe. Clearly there are times when hindering the activity could be ethical.

James, I like how you slid past being called on the fact that the regime in control of Burma are actually right-wing, and much of the opposition to them - both parliamentary and outside parliament, is left-wing.

Gives me faith in the non-changing nature of some things.

  • Hard News: Celebrity Gibberish,

To be fair, Timaru did actually remove all the parking meters from the main street.

When you're Timau, you really don't need to put additional impediments in front of people who might be brave enough to stop there ;)

  • Hard News: Celebrity Gibberish,

It took about 18 months for a ticket incurred in Timaru when I was working there (Timaru had particularly zealous parking wardens)

Wait, Timaru had a parking problem when you worked there? I wasn't aware it had a great need for parking wardens now...

  • Hard News: Celebrity Gibberish,

I had a fine from a parking ticket (which I never saw originally, must have come off the window) from the city council a few years ago. They sent me bills and I phoned them to demand a copy of the ticket, which they couldn't provide for me. It then got passed on to the court system, who told me that they didn't have a copy of the ticket with the information on it, the City Council had that and by the way they were charging me an additional $60 now that the file had been passed to them in court costs.

While on the phone with them they asked for my address and date of birth for what I thought was verification details. Then if I was employed, then my employer, their address, my position etc.

It was only after I got off the phone that I realised that they'd wanted the information to add to my file so that they could get IRD to take it out of my salary. Came this close to contacting the Privacy Commissioner to complain that they'd collected the information illegally.

I paid the $90, with still no idea about where and when I was supposedly illegally parked, just to get them off my back. Scary.

  • Hard News: Celebrity Gibberish,

If, say, an accountant racked up 200 hours of Community Service wouldn’t the most logical punishment be to get him or her to do that service sorting out accounts for various charities etc. (as long as the original crime wasn’t fraud)

Hear hear. It's very hard to find an auditor for a club these days, and those that do it charge an arm and a leg, the professional body is clamping down on it so less accountants will do it. We were quoted up to $2000 to audit our club accounts which don't even total $100K.

Why aren't assets (as written down values) being confiscated or salaries garnisheed once the bill gets to $1000?

Only the court can do this (the salaries, not sure about the assets) I think. Lots of people pay off their fines at $20/week from their salary etc.

  • Discussion: Uncivil Rights,

Invariably we do write/cover the issues but they're largely ignored by most people who, for one reason or another, simply don't care about politics.

That's a fair comment Felix. I think some of the concern is the amount of attention and placement that the media give some issues. Obviously that's not always something a journalist can control.

  • Southerly: Seventy per cent Monteith's,…,

And at 7pm, The Monteith's Sessions EP passes the download double-century

We sent it out to some Dunedin musos last night on facebook, a couple of hours later my girlfriend had it recommended to her by someone three links along.
