How exactly? Serious question.
up until about 18 seconds its 'we have been underperforming [the previous lot], we can do better, we can beat those aussies'. And then the 'together us kiwis can do it'.
Plus the party leader standing there talking to you with the music in the background. Very election advert.
(Doesn't have the other things you'd expect to find in an election advert, the diverse ordinary nzers, young and old, different skin tones, people working etc)
Not a good election advert, but I can see how people made the link. Just tenuous that it will help National's brand, or advertise the TV show.

People who haven't seen it and - Lord save us - want to, the video is on Scoop for the moment.
What it is is a really bad advert. It looks like a party political broadcast, which is the last thing you want if you want people to watch the show.

I've also seen someone get three weeks in and then shave out of depression as we'd only just realised that he was doing movember (blond moustache, slow growth, it was hard to see).
That's all me. It has the great side effect of only having to shave weekly. I can skip Movember as a good trade.

I believe that when recruiting for roles such as his, within a state institution with a cultural focus, a criteria should be an understanding of the local culture, and it social and political history.
For starters, we don't have that charter thing no more. You're making a role for TVNZ that it doesn't have any more.
And secondly, this would rule out most people with overseas expertise from working at tvnz. I'd like 'good at their jobs' to be the prime requirement for employment.
And thirdly, I struggle to believe that an advert called 'plain english' with a blue background is actually going to affect National party support. Labour should go back to digging around his house, that had traction at least.

His lack of awareness of the historical context of the advertisment is an indictment of our continual use of foreigners to oversee programming on our state run TV channels
I was going to comment, but Craig seems to have this one in hand.

This is why i'm so keen on 8 & 8 as I think it really does solve all the bigger issues:
I do like that suggestion. Currently any team that goes down will struggle to make it back up because they'll be moving down to an amateur division.

My point is that Nazi Germany was not an effective military power.
Perhaps a distinction could be made between the state and the military.
Rommell was vastly superior in Africa than anyone on either side from a purely military angle. His loss there wasn't due to not being very effective, he was just out-resourced and his allies were awful. The Nazi state didn't greatly affect the equation.

Vouchers, Paul, vouchers..
Vouchers of course need information about where the best place is to spend them, which means league tables, which means a method of building the league table, which means - standardised tests!
Did anyone check Tolley for Act membership before she stood?
FFS, TVNZ "news" manage to turn the issue into a toss up between teaching kids to count strawberries or putting on calf club days.
It really was an in depth analysis of the issues wasn't it? I mean it's only the education of almost every child in the country, doesn't matter how it's done does it TVNZ? Ohh look! Sheep! Cows! Pretty pictures!

If they hadn't been nazis, would they have been better athletes?
I suspect the Nazis probably provided more resources and time for them to become better athletes, than would have happened under a different German government, the Nazis being big on that sort of stuff.
I fail to see how 'admiring' or in some other way thinking that some things that the Nazis did were good, is necessarily wrong. Distaste for them and their activities didn't stop the rest of the world adopting many of their scientific and warfare advances. Should we ignore everything Germany and Germans did for 15 years because it may have been done under a swastika?

The Minister also talks about this pool of advisors that they can switch on and off for the different subjects one year to the next. It does beg the question as to what the science advisors will do for the next year. It's highly likely that they will change careers and so won't then be available when the Minister deems they are necessary at some arbitrary point in the future.
I'm reminded of parts of season 4 of The Wire (cheers to all those people on here who kept plugging that show, very good), where the Maths teacher was instructed to stop teaching maths and just teach writing skills, as that is where the school was falling down in terms of achievement and therefore funding. Absolutely terrifying way to run a schooling system.
