Any collapse of the national government for wasting money will only help Act however, since they're the party of tub-thumping about such things. And a collapse in the national vote will also likely help them, as there's no centrist party in parliament at present for national voters to move to.

Ah, but Kyle, 1/3 of the population is a voting bloc that's perfectly capable of tossing the inestimable Messrs Key and Hide out on their well-padded behinds. Auckland all on its own is quite able to determine the composition of any future government, with or without the connivance of the rest of the country.

Not at 60% according to the latest polling. Every Auckland voter who voted national in the last election could swap over and they'd still be able to form the government.

And would "throw[ing] too much money at Auckland" include Joyce's pet Bridge to Nowhere - aka the Puhoi-Wellsford Motorway Extension Project? Please tell me it would!

I haven't heard anyone talk about it at all, except here on PAS. Couldn't care less would be the attitude down here.

I'm really hoping that it's Auckland transport that'll be the hammer that knocks the gloss off National's honeymoon, but I'm beyond holding my breath about the electorate's ability to digest and be outraged about any information that doesn't affirm Key's messianic status.

I doubt it. For about 2/3 of the population, the only way the government could go wrong electorally would be to throw too much money at Auckland. For any other screwups - government or not - there's a limited interest in caring.

While it's an interesting regional issue, regional issue it remains.

World Cup losses rocket to $39m

I want to see a list of expenses. Where is the... most of a hundred million $ that ticket sales will earn going? Apart from selling tickets and putting the actual games on.

I suspect the big price that they've put on the land that the bridge is currently on would make that unlikely. Having two routes across the harbour to the city would be a nice luxury to have though.

I'm sure they'll be able to pick up some hookers while they're over there

One suspects they'll be keeping that sort of behaviour for after they get knocked out of the 2011 World Cup.

I'm picking a "Mike Brewer" type incident when one of the hookers goes down, and Anton Oliver gets rushed into the squad from the Oxford University team, rather than bringing over a NZ active player.

The cut out they had on the herald story seemed to have the cars on top, and then rail underneath in the middle, and walkway/cycleways underneath on the sides. Which would make sense. Could be mostly enclosed for wind protection and safety, but still allow ventilation and natural light, as well as viewing. Since it's those three that have the gradient problem, they should be on the bottom.

I'd like to see a nice design which made the bridge like sails. Understand that it has to work technically as well, but it would start to claim Auckland's identity and not look like a blot on the landscape.

    Only two hookers?

And injury prone ones at that. Don't they usually take three on tours like this?

    Yup.

And given the lineout problems they've had all year, surely the last thing we want is hooker to get injured the day before a test and have to put a prop on the bench to cover. Be a good position to have more depth than Mealamu and Hore in.

The coaching change - that's nuts.

Pretty clearly an admission that Hanson hasn't had it all year, and that Henry is stepping in to rescue the forwards, and that senior players have been kicking up a fuss about the coaching. The stuff story quoted Henry as saying that he hadn't coached forwards for some years so it would be a bit of a learning experience for him. FFS.

I'm placing bets now that the requirement for those three to stick together as a team is going to bite us come world cup. It's not unreasonable to suggest that this change was to prevent Hansen getting the chop.

I'm concerned that the best thing that gets provided for the residents as day time entertainment is Days of our Lives. That's crappy.
