Balloon not so well off though; they attacked it with shovels.

If by some miracle of physics the boy was in the helium capsule, and alive, I wanted the news anchor commenting on it to squeal out that the main danger was that he might be killed by a shovel to the head.

Found hiding in a box in his attic apparently. This must be the new 'boy down the well' trick.

"OMG the boy could have breathed in that helium"

OMG. He might have a squeaky voice forever!

I used a bike every day of every year of my secondary school years (even through snow!) in Auckland.

Snow being such a common feature in Auckland. Endless blizzards, every winter.

  • Field Theory: It's really a dick-move,

Actually tell a lie, that information has dated:

One woman, Manon Rhéaume, appeared as a goaltender for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning in preseason games against the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins, and in 2003 Hayley Wickenheiser played with the Kirkkonummi Salamat in the Finnish men's Suomi-sarja league.

Manon was pulled early in both her games, the coach admitted putting her on the ice was a publicity stunt to raise the profile of the Lightning, which was an expansion team.

Hayley Wickenheiser is the real deal. She played senior womens hockey at the age of 15, picking up gold at the world champs for Canada. She participated in Philadelphia Flyers rookie camps in the late 1990s, but didn't make the team (NHL has different rules). She currently plays pro hockey in Europe. She also represented Canada in softball at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Kyle: Do you think that this might raise some issues that are slightly more important than a spite fuck? I don't have any time for Trevor Mallard, but I wouldn't have wished this on him.

Actually, I can happily be gleeful at the prospect of him having to spend his time fixing stuff rather than breaking shit. Keep his hands busy and all that. Besides:

It appears my sympathy for McCully may have been misplaced.

  • Field Theory: It's really a dick-move,

New Zealanders celebrate winners, not qualifiers. Anything else is for losers.

Good to know. Do we get these rules given to us on a wee card at birth?

At the moment the level of participation, quality of the players, geographical spread, interest among the sports' viewing public are just not there.

I can't buy your argument Giovanni. There might be other reasons why one gender should have the 'main' name, and the other gets their gender tacked on as part of the name, but "you haven't earned it" doesn't seem like a valid reason. Surely being the best at that sport is enough?

Would we apply that to a gender in the rest of society? And be happy about it?

On the note of females not being allowed to play men at football. Ice hockey only allows this if the female plays in goal, womens ice hockey being non-checking. Despite the fact that it's a rule based difference, I'm sure it's primarily sexist in origin.

  • Hard News: After the Deluge,

I would also agree with Kyle about the lack of South Island coverage - the Stuff/Herald sites I only find useful for national, North Island and some Christchurch issues.

I suspect, particularly in terms of stuff, the fact that the ODT isn't a Fairfax paper probably has something to do with it as much as anti-south islandism.

  • Hard News: After the Deluge,

It's visible here because we've got roughly two papers that cover the entire country - Granny and DomPost.

    Whowhat?

You mean they cover national issues right, they don't cover south island news very well from what I've seen.

  • Speaker: The Freeviewer Diaries (3),

the best use for me is being able to watch TV One news and then go to TV3 news or catch something on One that clashes with a TV3 programme.

Gawd. I struggle to get through one channel of live crosses and whatnot. You do two a night?
