I must admit I am perpetually astonished at the extent to which local American politics is global news.
I think there is a growing feeling that Obama's presidency could be one which stands above the others in terms of being known world-wide for being significant.
Roosevelt for New Deal, Reagan for end of cold war, Kennedy/LBJ for Civil Rights. Lincoln for that whole civil war/slavery thing.
Obama could take a significant step in fixing USA health care, and get the US out of two major shitholes in the Middle East. I'll take an interest in all three of those.

DPF gave him "20 demerit points", which was greeted as an appalling assault on free speech by various other loons, who duly got "demerit points" themselves.
I'm reminded of about 20 years ago when I found myself playing dungeons and dragons with a rather pompous twit as a DM.
Any time the players did something he didn't like or argued with him, he's say "100 D lightning bolt! you're dead!". And then two minutes later the conflict would be resolved, the player's character would be un-deaded, and the game would continue for another 10 minutes before it happened again.
20 demerit points seems like a similarly stupid system.

Eww... sorry, folks, but that's one section of the speech I'd have begged Obama to put a blue pencil line through. Way too much Oprah, and not enough of the grown-up thoughtful Obama I like.
For me too, but I suspect it played pretty well in America across about 90% of Americans.

Well, you could play that game at home ...
Damn time zones!

1. What the All Blacks want, the All Blacks get.
I don't mind that, as long as when they want stupid things (ie, players sitting in the stands but not running around on the field) they get told to bugger off.

"Should keeping electoral promises, even silly ones, be a criminal offence as part of good governance?"

Yeah, the NZRU and the provinces give the impression that they are making it up all along.
You'd think there would be some simple guidelines which dictate how the All Blacks and provinces relate.
1. All Blacks have a number that they can include in their squad - say 30.
2. They pick 30, have them until they name the team, including possible bracketing for injuries etc.
3. Once they've named the team, the 8 or so that aren't in the team are released. If their provinces want them that weekend, they fly back to whereever the game is the day before. Then after the game they rejoin the all blacks.
4. If the provinces don't want them, they can help carry the drinks for the All Blacks or whatever. -
Hmm; where did I get Sydney from?
Must be subliminal AB De Villiers tracking going on.
He's on the Gold Coast at the moment.
(to which I have to add: Hamilton vs Gold Coast. Even my nationalistic fury will acknowledge that's not a difficult choice of where to spend a week, though if you're preparing for a rugby game on a NZ rugby field in NZ weather, I'd go with boring old Hamilton and the win).

My take was that alien guns weren't meant for day to day use, menacing muggers etc, but for 'when the shit hits the fan'. Which it didn't, ironically, until a human manages to work out how to use one.
I took them to be designed for a different environment, and therefore their effects were a bit crazy on earth/in atmosphere etc.

And then, if they get injured AND someone above them in the ABs [don't forget there's no lock cover at the moment], the entire point of bringing them in as injury cover and teaching them the plays etc is negated.
There has to be a balance. I don't have a problem with them being brought in to train with the All Blacks and having a wider squad than 22. They're not going to play this, so surely they should fall back into the same policy as "we release some all blacks depending on their workload to provinces when we have a couple of weeks of no All Black games".
Fear about them being injured Naly would mean that Carter and McCaw shouldn't have played in the recent Shield victory against Wellington.
At some stage the All Blacks have to name a team of 22, and bar bracketing or concerns that players should have a week or two off after a hectic schedule, if the All Blacks aren't going to play them, surely the provinces have the right to them.
Are the likes of Gear, Ellison etc physically in Sydney? If so, I can understand, although not necessarily agree with, it.
Hamilton.
