  • Hard News: Food and drink,

<quote>Disclosure: I currently have chicken drumsticks steeping in a purchased teriyaki marinade. I'm thinking seasoned rice and green beans with that.<quote>

That's it Russell. I'm moving to the top of the list of people who will be up against the wall after the food [not "in a minute"!] revolution.

  • Guilty 2: Taito Philip Field,

The likes of DPF are now feigning righteous indignation, which doesn't surprise but isn't justified. At least there was an enquiry over Field's behaviour. How about Richard Worth's? I'm not suggesting Worth's done anything criminal. But there was no transparency in the decision to dump Worth.

There was no transparency in the decision to dump Field either. He clearly should have been dumped for corruption, but the QC report was strangled so as to be half useless, and then he was held onto for long months until he said he would consider standing for his new party.

I'd rather have them dumped and not know why than have them not dumped and know that they should be.

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

I was gonna make a cunning post about wanting to make hamburgers but only having hot dog ingredients, but Jack has beaten me to it with some awesome sounding sushi.

I don't know how it could be classist.

Man. I don't know where to start on that. There certainly are class elements to food (and drink), though as Giovanni points out, often boundaries get broken.

Consider how many of your Gisborne factory workers drink expensive wine... or indeed wine at all, relative to the people who own their factories, or the MPs whose rather large incomes and kickbacks we've been discussing elsewhere.

  • Hard News: Deja Vu,

I suspect there's a lot of families with six children who would be damn happy to be on $100K, let alone well over $300K.

But your income at this sort of level isn't in any way affected by the number of children you pop out, and fair enough.

And if there was a pic of Debbie Harry in that week's copy he'd buy two - one for cutting the picture out and sticking it on his wall, and the other to iron and keep in pristine condition.

Wait. But he wasn't at all concerned about running an iron over her?

  • Hard News: Deja Vu,

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Wayne Mapp has admitted his family trust receives taxpayer funds from a Wellington property he lets to another MP.

The disappointing thing about the news that has come out about English, Mapp, etc, is that there clearly is a system for getting as much as possible out of the taxpayer, and as soon as they took their seats they all adopted the system to the maximum, with no thought for the morality of it at all.

This sentence from radionz makes it look like they all stand in a circle, and everyone moves one house to the left. They then get income from the MP is renting their house, in order to claim back from the taxpayer the cost of renting the house of the MP next to them.

Clearly these people have no shame, and I'd suspect a few Labour ministers were no better.

Phil: You know something, as I've said elsewhere: Who gives a shit?

Well obviously in that tale, Jenny Shipley did.

  • Field Theory: Interesting conversations,

Off topic, but I caught the sports news last night (can't remember if it was 1 or 3), and the theme of the story on the Black Caps leaving for Sri Lanka was basically "guys want to perform well there because it leads to IPL contracts". The coach said it, and a couple of players said it when interviewed.

How far they've come since a few years ago. I don't especially mind them thinking that, but who the hell puts the players and coach in front of a camera and says "yeah we want to do well so we get signed for a big paying IPL team". Could they at least pretend that representing their country actually means something these days?

Since I discovered the fresh pita at La Cigale

Lucky bugger. Pita that's been sitting in the truck/supermarket for a couple of days just doesn't compare.

I have yet to find (or actually, look very hard) fresh pita in Dunedin for taking home.

  • Island Life: There is no alternative,

Can we say that, these remarkable and commendable efforts notwithstanding, the charge that people who were against tax cuts and yet don't voluntarily overpay are somewhat hypocritical, is supremely idiotic?

No no no Gio. That's not stupid.

I'd happily give back my tax cut.

But to be fair, I want free doctors visits for my children and I, and no fees when my son arrives at university in return. If Craig could arrange that, we'll have a deal.
