I'm just not convinced that throwing money solely at the victim is the best solution for a deeper underlying problem
That's a statement you could make about all welfare.
Which doesn't make withdraw of the money and the message "sort it out" make any sense.
People have the right to have a basic level of income to live on. When the state has decided that it's not appropriate for you to live with your family any more, that comes in the form of the independent circumstances benefit.

I'm here, shaking my head like the old crank that I am.
Not gnawing on your keyboard and muttering italian insults?

I don't mind us maintaining the house. Like Russell I mind the fact that he's got us maintaining the Wellington one which is where his whole family lives, not the Southland one which is where he goes when he visits his electorate. Seems to me the rule should be "you pay for your family home, where ever that is, we'll pay for an apartment either in your electorate or in Wellington".

To be honest, when picking people to write supportive articles about, I'll give him that Paula Bennett is a better pick than Tony Veitch.
All relative of course.

Every student moved from the public system to the private system saves the government/taxpayer money. Money that can be spent on other things.
Well, only if the government's increase of private school funding of $35 million moves about $50 million worth of public school students over to private schools (they'll still receive some public funding in their private education).
Otherwise it will have cost the government overall.

I didn't see that the sentence "Bennett didn't connect with her Maori side till university." needed to be in there.
She might not have connected with her Maori side until then but the statements in:
She'd been determined to reject that "victim stuff", to not be that "poor, uneducated Maori solo mum".
are about her identity, and I'm not sure if Tapu should be saying she wasn't Maori enough for her determination not to be that stereotype to be invalid.
It also only lives in those two sentences. It's not picked up at all in the story so I fail to see why it's there.

This increasingly feels a lot like the last national government. I'd like to say that it's such bad politics and will cost them the next election, but that didn't necessarily happen last time, so no indication that it will happen this time around.

Have a look on the salt packets ingredient list. There is an ingredient called "anti caking agent" its real name is potassium ferrocyanide. Its relatively stable until its mixed with acid. Then it produces hydrogen cyanide gas.
I hardly touch ordinary salt since I found http://www.smokeandspice.co.nz/:
Smoke and Spiced Solar Salt.
Marlborough Solar Salt is smoked by hand, and then tumble roasted with garlic, shallots, coriander and the mighty chilli! The result is one of the finest seasonings in the world. Suitable for both shakers and grinders, the sensational Smoke and Spiced Solar Salt will enhance all foods, elevating them to the heights of culinary Nirvana. The smell alone is enough to drive a man wild.
See also their manuka smoked garlic bulbs. Wowsers.

Can anyone seriously doubt Peter Russell is rocketing towards contention as a possible Super 14 coaching - even eventually All Black - role? His players seem to have a brain, they play sensibly when sensibleness is the order of the day, and they play expansively when they sense opportunities, and if a little injury needs to be thrown they'll do it - and all the time they seem to be having FUN.
No doubts the NZRU will be sending him oversees very shortly in that case :)

What is this "6 in the morning" thing? I have not heard of it.
It's the time Simon thinks night clubs should close. Gym must be the barman.
