Increasing operations per dollar is one aspect, but the big gains should be made by improving nutrition, lifestyle, attitudes and picking up problems early when the solutions are cheaper.
That's my "if I had a billion dollars" plan! Careful, some people will find it a bit controversial.

Which is why I was rather surprised nobody asked Goff why, if he thinks the status quo is so damn unfair, he didn't do something about it during the nine years he was a very senior Cabinet minister. :)
I've also got to admit I'm rather creeped out by the idea that there's a deserving (middle) class who need help how, but I guess everyone before who lost their job and was ineligible for benefit because of their spouse's income wasn't.
Aye to both of those.
I'm sure it wouldn't make stimulus or political sense, but I'd be quite happy with a bit of benefit cut reversal in these tough times (five years ago would have been good, now will also be OK).

But she instead commented on the grotesqueness of his use of the provocation defence to smear his victim, which is absolutely nothing to do with Women's Refuge.
Because when men say "if she hadn't done X, I wouldn't have done Y to her", Women's Refuge shouldn't take an interest? I suspect there's a lot of women in Women's Refuge houses who found the past few weeks very familiar.

Why not just identify "at-risk" women and ensure they get plenty of folate?
How? I can't think of any effective way to get more folate into the vast majority of women of child-bearing age, without putting it in some common food that we're all going to eat.

Denmark has some of the highest unemployment benefits in the world, but it also liberal hiring policies.
What do you mean by liberal hiring policies? Liberal for employers? Employees? Both?

I appreciate that Clayton has a right to speak in his own defence, but I don't accept that all tv-news needed to broadcast all his ramblings. It was obscene.
Aye. I was glad to skip all of it by not being near a TV.
The provocation defence is an odd one, we don't have "insanity" as a defence here but I think maybe we should.
I'm not sure how any one can do that to another human being and not be insane.
I don't feel the same happiness/relief that so many people feel at the verdict. Society isn't even the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff in this instance.

By comparison, in NZ successive governments have allowed us to manage things for ourselves.
You've ignored the billions of dollars that the last government put into the Super Fund, which is investing that back into the local and international economy.

There's your instant, your big brand beans, your little independent roasters and your direct-from-Cuba importers - how do each of these groups comply with a standard?
I can't imagine adding folic acid to coffee beans (which is how a fair bit of coffee is purchased) is practical.
Also I suspect that people are so religious about their coffee and its quality that they'd be up in arms if we tried to add anything to it that might affect it.

Here's some positive things that we can do: Stop flying off on overseas holidays, stop buying airfreighted goods (including books and stuff bought online), start supporting reforestation projects in NZ, support native wildlife, euthenase feline and canine pets.
If you could not suggest I get rid of members of my family, I think you might get a better reception for the rest of your suggestions.

Not sure if it would be possible to put them behind barriers. 200 km stages, two sides of the road, that's a lot of barriers. Even if you only had to do a quarter of the distance, it's 100 km of barriers.
