You can take the boy out of the Shore, Kyle, but...

Which raises the question of whether you're still a shore girl or a westie.

Please let us know if Baader-Meinhof is any good Rich. I'll make time to go see it if it's worth seeing (its my area of academic interest), but it involves skipping something that I've already paid for and can't get refunded for.

All good, then, just so long as you eat eleven - count them, eleven slices - of bread each day. As we all do.

As people have pointed out, folate acid doesn't just come from bread. And I presume even if you don't eat the recommended amount, you still get some benefit.

That press release from the Coalition of Parents of Children with Spina Bifida seems to me tells a side to the story that should be getting a lot more coverage than some head baker.

I'd like to see a baker on the news saying "yes, I'd love to help find a way that I can improve the health of future children and prevent families from having to go through this." There must be some who feel that way about it surely?

Instead I got "some loaves will have to much, some loaves will have too little". Which seemed to me to be irrelevant given that people don't eat the same amount of bread each day anyway.

  • Cracker: Home (Is Where I Want to Be),

I would've thought someone with access to a million bucks might've had slightly more sense.

My parents purchased their current home from an elderly lady who'd live in it for a gazillion years and had had it on the market for a year at an unrealistic price. Her family were keen to move her out (the house has lots of steps both inside and outside).

Eventually she was persuaded to auction, which is where my parents were the highest bidder, but well under the reserve. Afterwards they added on another $10,000. The real estate agent came back asking them to put another $20K on. They stuck to their guns and said no. Eventually the real estate agent dropped their commission just to get the deal made, they wanted rid of the house.

  • Hard News: When it's Not Okay,

On a related note is it just me or is the Clayton Weatherston/Sophie Elliot case just getting more and more bizarre.

I didn't know either of them, but I know some people who knew Sophie. It's highlighted how horrendous the media coverage of these cases is to watch and has made me avoid this particular case. I'm starting to wonder what public interest is served by 5 minutes a night of this "murder porn".

(And what FletcherB said above about the abusers. Aye, I think there's some over-assigning of conscious planned thought to these people. Often it's just not knowing a better way.)

  • Legal Beagle: Begging for trouble,

As an aside, my recollection is that protests at Parliament were often allowed to proceed until shortly before nightfall (including one where students occupied the top of the main steps).

If that's the 1996 bus trip, the students made the explicit decision to stay until after nightfall to challenge this convention. Nothing was done.

It was a particularly silly day. Once the students failed to get into the building it became an increasingly pointless protest and I took off for a few hours to go shopping and come back to see what happening in the evening. Did get my photo in the Herald though.

  • Hard News: In the nicest possible way,

I do not want gosspiy details but it sets a pretty dangerous precedent if our leaders think they can get away with shit like this with no repercussions.

I just fail to see what he's got away with. Key fired Worth. If there isn't anything more than that (other people involved, lasting implications), I don't think there is an overwhelming public interest in knowing the details. People still have a private life and maybe if they resign or are fired they should be entitled to keep it.

But you will never know because it has been turned into allegations and speculations and gossip already which was my point for transparency.Worth is probably worse off than ever due to the actions of our PM.

Well maybe. But that's their problem if they've made it worse for themselves. That's not an argument for us all knowing the details "because it would be better for you".

  • Up Front: Because You Should Know,

Regardless of media, 'objectionable' is a subjective term, and I sometimes have problems with the way it's been applied.

K, fair nuff. That is consistent :)

I understand Sacha's point about the list, if published, becoming a menu for perverts but how can they consider (if indeed, they are considering) taking punitive action against someone on the basis of trying to access something that no-one has indicated is illegal/unsavoury?

If all you get from the blocking is a page such as Emma indicated, then obviously no illegal activity has taken place.

Frequent hits of blocks might put you on a list of DIA interest I guess. But if they came and searched your computer, there would still have to be illegal stuff on it in order for it to go further.

I know nothing about how paedophiles collect their material, but I wonder how much this software will stop. If it's torrented or emailed in zip files then this system won't do anything?

    Kyles from Otago

    Argh. :)

Tis true, lived here almost as long as in Auckland now. And last time I went beyond Auckland airport was 2001.

  • Hard News: Our new strategy is to FAIL,

I've always thought that if I was to win Big Wednesday, I'd buy back the Flying Nun catalogue from Warners, do the rights thing once (and do it right) and make a beautiful thing with eMusic. It's kind of tragic that I don't feel like that any more.

One suspects it might be the lack of winning Big Wednesday, not the changes to eMusic that might be the prime spanner in the works.

Kyle, that was in response to Tess's initial comment

OK. I was just curious why you'd argue against blocking objectionable material on the internet. Is that an argument you'd use for all media?
