  • Island Life: The resignation of Captain Worth,

Personally I'd just like to see John Key take the damn text messages, by whatever means gets them into his hands, and then do whatever is appropriate to Worth.

Several days of stupid arguments seem to have lost the fact that a member of parliament was apparently sexually harassing someone.

This standoff between the prime minister and someone who seems simply to be the victim of harassment is idiotic and unbecoming of the position of PM.

    Outdoors

    * Perform CPR

Given that most mechanics work indoors, I'm not sure what makes this an outdoor skill.

I can see it now. A mechanic accidentally electrocutes himself. Mechanics cluster around him, unsure what to do. One bright spark utters the lifesaving words: "Quick! Drag him outside so we can perform CPR!"

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

Can I utter the words "terrorists win" without starting the whole spiral all over again?

I was going to make the same comment but... blah. Crappy.

I hope some people get together and reopen the clinic and keep its work going.

Understand why the family doesn't want to be those people though, enough how he was treated in life without it continuing after he died.

  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

I remember as a kid in the '70s going on a special train to the Manorburn (sp?) dam to skate on the frozen dam. Skate hire was included. I remember it clearly because it was so very much better than doing so on an inside ice rink. It's strange but I feel pointless going around and around an indoor rink but no so outside on a frozen dam.

Sadly global climate change is likely to kill these sorts of experiences for our grandchildren. Outdoor ice rinks (artificial and natural) now have shorter seasons. 50 years from now Mannorburn might not have a season at all, you'll have to catch it on a cold snap and take your chances that it won't thin and drop you into the water below (this happened to a kid on one of our ice hockey teams two years ago when they skated on the dam, his team mates dragged him out).

  • Hard News: Mt Albert Old-School,

The same way I think it would be good to have an ethnically diverse police force -- which we also don't have.

I should point out that the police put a lot of effort into trying to increase ethical and gender diversity in the police. They actively recruit Maori, Pacific Island, Asian and female police officers. Takes a long time to have that flow through an organisation when some officers have 30 year careers in the job.

Paul: Just as a courtesy, could you stop telling me what I do and don't know.

Paul, I think your wee joke skipped over some people.

  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

The council has allowed The Arts Festival to put an Ice Rink, the TV One Ice Dome using the City Council's newly purchased inflato-Dome, in the Square - undermining a perfectly good local Ice Rink in Brougham street - nice one!
Would've been nice to consult and or include them - but no... Cold-hearted Chch indeed...

Christchuch is what could be termed 'under-iced'. The current rink is privately owned, and while a reasonable facility, there isn't enough time in the day to meet the demand for it. Hundreds of people play their senior ice hockey competition during the summer because it's impossible to get ice time before midnight during winter.

Demand is at present capable of supporting a second rink - either in the same facility as the current rink, which is what Dunedin has, or in a separate facility. High capital costs will prevent most private businesses doing that.

Bringing ice into the city is a fantastic idea. Shame they couldn't do without the dome and just have an outdoor rink. Skating outdoors - like Alexandra, Tekapo, Naseby - is a wonderful experience.

  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

We tried last time already. Mr 3.6 % is like Beelzebub, no matter how unpopular he is, you can't get rid of him..

Well that doesn't apply to local body elections, which is how Nat was using it.

I agree with Peter over Paul (almost biblical really). We don't have a direct democracy, we have a representative democracy. You vote people in and then in the end they make the decisions and pay for it if they make the wrong ones.

If so many candidates didn't make commitments on the stadium (which was a big issue) they should have been forced to do so or pay the price at the (postal) ballot box.

If being quiet doesn't cost them, they'll keep on doing it.

  • Not Guilty,

Right, so now the information is free (free! free, I tells ya!), a public library, for example, wouldn't be in breach of the order by sticking a notice in the window saying: 'come and look at the front page of The Herald for Sat June 6th 2009'. They didn't publish it, so they're alright?

Given that the Herald drops thousands of its papers in letterboxes every morning, the copies remaining in libraries are probably the lesser cock-up.
