Um, there were just on 3 million people enrolled to vote in 2008, and turnout was 79.5%. Now if that could have been boosted by 4.7% to 84.2%, that would have been a truckload more people voting.

Ah yup. But not the figure you came up with - 175,000.

I'm no fan of John Banks, but unless you're willing to prove massive electoral fraud I really think its time to get the hell over it.

I'll happily admit he was democratically elected. He's still a dick though, which I'll repeat as long as he keeps popping up on my TV.

  • Hard News: Mt Albert Old-School,

Me I go with what works: in a controlled experiment last year, the Electoral Commission found that people who got a text from the orange elections guy on the day had a 4.7% higher voting turnout.

Now that would be a simple way to get another 175,000 more votes on Election Day 2011.

I think your maths needs work.

If we could send the txt to 4 million people that might be possible, but 4 million people includes a whole heap who aren't allowed to vote.

  • Hard News: Mt Albert Old-School,

In fact, I wonder if it would be possible for the Greens to rort an electorate by focusing on one (or more) of the universities, going on a membership drive and getting the students to reregister in the university electorate instead of back at their parents houses.

Sadly students have the worst turnout of any sector of society.

And they're also a fair reflection of wider society in terms of their voting, except more pushed to both margins (they overvote ACT, Alliance, Greens relative to the nationwide vote).

I was working my way towards asking Kyle how much he was prepared to pay for me not to ruin his nice event. Veiled intimidation being one of Italy's finest exports and that.

Two thousand people plus alcohol in an ice rink with New Zealand taking on Australia for the first ever ice hockey game televised live on NZ TV, appearing on Sky as the buildup to the 22 August Bledisloe Cup match?

Some Italian with his Ottawa Senators top is the least of our worries.

  • Hard News: Mt Albert Old-School,

Quite. We have seen many Labour & National minions at various intersections, waving ribbons & placards over the past month (even inthe pouring rain) and have seen John Boscowan at the local Pak 'n Save.
But not a Green to be seen.....

Supporting car culture, surely. Greens should be hanging out at bus stops and train stations!

Having been freshly banned elsewhere, I should probably not comment...

  • Not Guilty,

I understand why -- Robin was not the defendant -- but it is a paradox.

I wonder how the whole thing would be different if the defence were trying to say "It was the other guy" and the other guy was still alive.

Probably a lot easier to do when your alternative killer isn't alive to defend themselves.

I don't think I can be accused of not being patient.

I think some people were getting tired of your patience to be honest ;)

    That was f**kin appalling.

Aye. I presume they no longer allow fans in with sharp knives (as much as possible), but that still wouldn't stop the fan jumping him and pummelling him.

You would have thought the security should be crouched around the court facing the crowd so they can see that stuff coming, rather than noticing it's going on once the crowd jeering encourages them to look up from whatever they were doing.
