My partner and I were just discussing what the celebrant is actually FOR and why you have to have one at all.

I presume it does have a role as an independent person at a wedding to ensure that nothing improper is going on - dragging the bride up to the altar and forcing her to sign up etc.

I don't know what training they get or rules/guidelines they have to follow, or if there is any standard in such things between religious and non-religious celebrants.

I take your point, Gareth, but that's how it works on marathon day, and no-one gets hurt.

Yes but marathon runners will behave a lot differently than a bunch of protesters who aren't supposed to be there. Marathon runners are trying to get across it as quick as possible. Protesters might try and climb things, put up flags, have kids doing who knows what.

Particularly given that it sounds like the protest organisers didn't have marshals. You'll get one protester who thinks that they need to walk along the top of the median barrier to make their point, no one tells them to get down, oops they fall over while doing a wee "I'm walking on the harbour bridge" dance, whammo.

As a protest marshal I once had to split a (illegal) protest march in half to let an ambulance through, and pull protesters off unsafe structures that they were climbing to hang banners. At other times I've physically stood in front of cars while they gun their engines towards you to drive through protest marches.

Too cautious is not necessarily a bad thing.

  • Field Theory: All Misty-Eyed,

When the crunch came he was starting games for the Hurricanes at 9. He was the best player the 'canes had at that position, or at least that's what they thought. It's obvious the chiefs didn't think that about Messam at 8

Yes, but from the Chiefs point of view, that might be like having a decent #7 turn up at the Crusaders. You ain't going to bump McCaw no matter how good he is, so maybe he shifts.

Lauaki tends to be bloody good (if very up and down) at Super level, despite never getting to that level in the black jersey. If putting Messam at #6 gives the Chiefs the best team on the day, that's what they'll be doing.

  • Hard News: Advertisements for diversity,

A propos of which, is Tim Wilson (TVNZ's New York correspondent, who sits in a studio each night at 2am to introduce footage from partner channels) not a walking breathing example of the gratuitous live cross?

You'd think the person in front of the camera in Auckland could do that.

(I hope that's not all of his job)

  • Hard News: Advertisements for diversity,

I think a rule of thumb for live crosses would be to not do them in a place where _no_ information relevant to the story originated.

My rule/wish of thumb is there should only be a live cross when something is going on or will be going on that is happening live and relevant to the story. Like:

    1. Bullets currently flying through the air.
    2. Interviewing someone live and they're at the story.

The live cross to the courtroom which is closed where something happened earlier that day... I start to throw things at the TV. This is not better quality news television, it's wasting all our time pretending it is.

  • Field Theory: All Misty-Eyed,

If you can't force your way into a position for your Super 14 side surely that says you may not be the best person for that position in the All Blacks?

See however, Weepu. Covers 10 a fair bit for Hurricanes and Wellington, will never force Carter out of that spot for the ABs. Fine halfback though, and should play for ABs again this season as a #9.

Provincial/super sides will have a different mix and so might do something different. If Lauaki doesn't get picked for the ABs, then Messam might be the best #8 after So'oialo. I can't imagine he'll make it in at #6, Thomson will back up there surely.

I'm not entirely sure what the topic of the post was when David made it, but I don't think Captiver 'captured' it.

  • Hard News: Stop the Enabling,

Are you seriously saying that the benchmark is immediate visible injuries? Do you want to get into some sick debate about how much facial bruising is enough?

In this case he should advocate for parents to carry around phone books. Urban legend has these well used in police cells to beat up prisoners without leaving a mark.

Now, just off to sort out my kids - one of them needs a good clip over the ear ( heh).

    Haha!

Oh no wait, that wasn't funny, that was rather inappropriate, I got confused.

What a fascinating discussion. I've swayed back and forth on this rollicking ride through the Catholic Church, gay marriage, sex abuse etc.

I fear however we've left behind 'the gays' and their need to be treated like the rest of us and either have marriage, or have it done away with as a civil institution.

This feels like a forum topic which should push people somewhere. Is there a place that we can sign up for this important change? A meaningless email petition that we can forward to all our friends? Something slightly more substantial?

  • Speaker: Grand Theft Auckland,

That says it all, really. Auckland is being treated as if it's a business, with the sole shareholder R. Hide, of Epsom. As opposed to a democratic body for the exercise of the people's will.

I don't find the fact that there's a lawyer on there at all unusual. I think that's entirely sensible.

We appointed a lawyer to the board of our sports facility. For an organisation that signs large contracts and employs people, having a legal voice on it is very important. Another club actually appointed an accountant to the same board so they're two good voices to have involved. Both are also involved in the clubs and have children that play, so there expertise is only part of their purpose.

The transition board is going to oversee (rightly or wrongly) millions of dollars of expenditure, sign very complex legal documents, and interpret what I suspect is going to be hastily written law.

I don't have any problem with the idea that there should be community representation of some sort on the board. No legal and financial expertise? That's nuts.
