When you put it all in in sentence like that ...

Not all at once though. You've got to spread your evil out, like vegemite.

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

If I beat this guy to death with a history textbook, I have the full support of all here, right?

It would seem more appropriate to stab him in the eyes with a couple of ice age era knitting needles. But whatever you have close to hand

I suppose that you could always put a footpath/cycleway at the side of the tunnel (as happens in the Mt Vic tunnel in Wellington) - it'd be absolutely vile to go through (as the Mt Vic tunnel is), but you could do it if you were really worried about walkers/cyclists.

The Mt Vic tunnel cycleway certainly makes a bit of sense, it's a 50KM zone and it's the only quick and easy way to ride from one side to the other.

Motorway tunnel on the other hand will be a much faster speed limit, which cyclists won't benefit from (at least us mere mortals), and there will be roads/cycleways above ground, which, while not quite as efficient as a motorway, won't be horrific for getting from A to B.

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

Many of us enjoy walking. Surely, however, most of the pleasure lies in our enjoyment of the passing landscape. Will anyone enjoy walking any distance through a long tunnel beneath the harbour?

I hope someone pointed out to him that YOU CAN'T WALK ON THE MOTORWAY IN NEW ZEALAND! Whether it's above or below ground. Duh.

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

Many people are uncomfortable driving in tunnels. Some call it the Princess Diana syndrome, but many people suffer from genuine claustrophobia in such environments.

I'm sure that's an issue for some people, but he makes it sound like the motorway is the only possible way for these people to get from A to B. Presumably the whole Auckland roading system isn't going underground.

Apropos the Media7 discussion - I hope someone asks why bank economists are always so prominently featured (along with the real estate shills) when house prices come up.

I hate those TV3 news live cuts to an ASB economist who runs through the important share prices and whatnot at about 6.30. This is an advert! If economic news is important enough to be on the news, can the damn TV stations hire a reporter to do the job?

Given the significance of the economy on all of us these days, I find it bizarre that the news employs umpteen sports reporters who recycle sports news tripe (which is fine, I don't care, it's sports), but can't front up with someone who isn't part of the screwed up economic system to report on it.

  • Hard News: The Sunday Capers,

So, yes, TV3 interviewed TWO people, on location, about Tony Ryall's dress sense.

Gotta get balance in the story, can't just report one side's opinion on the matter!

  • Field Theory: Must be some guy that Lester,

Why do Man U play warm-up games in Asia every season?

But soccer is big in Asia. There's big money for Man U to go play in Asia, and it suits Man U. to go there and raise their profile and sell craploads of red shit. Not the case with NFL and London.

Plus, there's a massive difference between warmup games, which don't matter, and one of the largest one day sporting events in the world.

(I've been thinking about pre-season games a lot recently. My goal for the next 10 years is to get a pre-season NHL game played at the Dunedin Ice Stadium).

  • Field Theory: Must be some guy that Lester,

(I forgot to append to my previous post "What the hell is wrong with just playing overtime until one team scores?")

So run the Air NZ Cup with a Ranfurly Shield knockout tournament (by the way I don't want to change the way the shield is won, this is just an example).

But (and I'm assuming that you mean run AirNZ Cup one weekend, Ranfurly shield the other) you're still faced with weekends where there's not a lot of rugby going on. And the weeks earlier in the competition, there'd be a hell of a lot of rugby going on, but it'd be 100-3 drubbings.

And if you lengthen the provincial season you not only take All Blacks out of it, you take Super players out of a significant part of it.

I'd much rather we stop pretending that AirNZ cup is a top-tier competition. The quality of the rugby might support it, the money doesn't.

Move it to midweek and play it the same time as whatever Super Rugby ends up being, each super franchise having 3 or 4 feeder provincial teams.

Of all the stupid ways to finish a game of sport, a penalty shootout at rugby posts has to be one of the most stupid, second only to the 20-20 bowl-off.

Would have been vastly improved if the other team were allowed to scale the posts like Chinese circus performers and try and stop the ball going through.

  • Island Life: Q+A. Fill in the blanks.,

However, by the time XP came out everyone was using IT and there was now a large market that was ready (and easily convinced) to upgrade. Hence, bubble.

Not many work places will have gone out and bought new machines for all their staff in one year. Most will have just continued to buy the latest computer with the latest operating system as the old machines got too old.

I run a four year cycle in my department, the latest operating system or software has no affect at all on our hardware purchasing. Computers also wouldn't account for a 20% increase in capital purchasing, and I work in a very computer intensive workplace. Computers pale in comparison to capital spent on new and existing buildings.

  • Field Theory: Must be some guy that Lester,

I have often wondered why the NZRFU hasn't made the Ranfurly Shield a knockout competition.

Because you'd have a premiere rugby competition start with 32 teams = 16 games.

    Then next week 8 games. Then 4, 2, 1.

It'd be a 5 week competition that teams would have to prepare for, half of them to get knocked out in the first round.

Soccer that doesn't matter because you play in multiple competitions at once, you just play more games in a week if you're still in the knockouts. You can't do that in rugby, there's no culture of playing 2 or 3 games a week.

Rugby you'd have to block out 5 clear weeks when they couldn't play in any other competition. Instead of potentially 80 games (16 games x 5 weeks) you'd only have 31. That's a loss of 49 games, ticket sales, merchandising, TV coverage etc. Most of the teams would spend 3 or 4 of those weeks sitting on their butts having been knocked out.
