I wear goggles underwater, and find that it improves my (reasonably severe) myopia no end. Or at least that's my entirely unscientific impression.

I like those moments when you're having your eyes tested when you give an answer and the optomotrist pauses and mutters something and you know your most recent answer just completely contradicted the answer you gave 3 questions ago.

The thing that annoys me the most is choosing frames. I basically can't see without my glasses on, and to choose new frames, I need to take my glasses off. I have to take someone with me to give me an honest opinion as to how frames look, as the only way I can see is having my face about 4 inches from the mirror.

  • Field Theory: It's the Super 14, baby!,

But that's because the NPC is Tier 2 rugby; if it goes back to being Tier 1, presumably it'll get more like Tier 1 money?

It's 3rd tier rugby. Super rugby is the second tier.

Wait, the rugby season starts next week doesn't it? I'll get excited about it then.

Super rugby in its current format surely should be coming close to a decent restructure. South Africa have prioritised their Currie Cup, surely it's time to ditch them and they can play European teams, and we could have a decent Pacific Rim competition with a Pacific Island team or two, a Japanese team, west coast USA, and a couple of Argentinian teams (OK, I know they're not really Pacific Rim). It could be 16 - 20 teams playing in two pools.

Australia and NZ between them should have enough strength to muscle that competition into starting and finishing at a decent time of year. Like late March - early June.

And, the sooner NPC provinces move into the new millenium and recognise that they are the third tier (1st= tests, 2nd= super rugby), that they should be paying their players less and earning their money through transfer fees for the players they develop, and that their entire competition should be run tuesday - thursday nights so it could run during the international window and not clash with test matches... the better.

And hack back on whatever the All Blacks get and put some more peanuts out for the Junior ABs, Maori ABs, and the Ferns so they have a proper schedule each year.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

(Q for the lawyers out there - are jurors supposed to dob in fellow jurors who are clearly not up to the task? Or is it just a given that the "peers" potentially sitting in judgement on you will have "life experiences" that cover the full spectrum from fact to fantasy?)

I was once told about some research where prosecutors, following a guilty verdict, got jurors to write down a basic sequence of events relating to the crime - what happened, when, in what order, with what etc.

As often as not the prosecutors found that not only did the members of the jury not get things 'right' as either side had presented it, often in significant ways, but often presented a story which was internally inconsistent/impossible in terms of times, objects, actions etc.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

My understanding is that both sides have the same number of challenges, so I don't see why it would necessarily affect the make up in favour of one side or the other.

Well it could do if you wanted to exclude a minority.

If there's a pool of 40 jurors, 5 might be Asian. If you were prosecuting an Asian person you might challenge all Asian jurors.

It wouldn't be very easy to go the other way and exclude all Pakeha jurors, as there would probably be 20 of them.

In a date rape trial you couldn't exclude all females, but you might be able to exclude all females under 40 or something.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

The other issue, though, is to what extent barristers use the challenge system to massage the makeup of juries.

The challenge system is pretty limited in NZ I understand. Unlike other countries where you can question the jurors, I think in NZ you can just challenge based on their appearance. I think the defence and prosecution can challenge up to six times?

So you might challenge some women for a rape case, you might make guesses from their appearances about how they'll treat their client, but as a lawyer you're really just guessing.

Anybody with friends or family caught up in the Hanover Finance debacle might be interested in what Hanover co-founder Eric Watson has been up to. NBR reports on Watson's extravagant 50th birthday party in Istanbul. The pictures are here.

Apparently the theme was bring a partner dressed like they have more money than sense.

Is that how it works ?

I don't know how it is for other sports, but if you're a sport that they dont' think there will be a good audience for, yes, you have to pay.

I understand it's about $50K to bring in the outside broadcasting teams for a day to film your sport, for a basic coverage with a few cameras.

That doesn't get you on the TV, you'd have to pay more for that.
