Certainly no need to drive.
Since when has lack of need stopped us exercising our god-given right to drive everywhere?

Maybe I wasn't paying attention when the big tv shows about postmodernism and other cultural theories were screened.
Well there's plenty of TV shows about postmodern art and architecture and literature.
If you mean cultural theories in relation to Foucault, we should probably say post-structuralism. And it would be difficult to do a TV show about post-structuralism. You could do a TV show which analysed something from a post-structuralist perspective. I don't watch much 'arty shit', so I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Kyle, I agree, but I'm saying nobody is writing for the non-academic audiences.
Based on what? Academics reconstruct their academic work for a more popular audience all the time.
In my area of interest, Jamie Belich presented his own, and other people's research in a reasonably good, and popular TV series on the New Zealand Wars about a decade ago. There's some very good academically driven TV shows coming out of the UK on both history and science. They're even fronted by academics, and have still been successful.

First there's another, albeit minor, ethics investigation.
As the basis for an ethics investigation, that really has to be the most stupid little thing.
Do they not have enough to do up there in Alaska?

I've become frustrated over the past couple of years as Dunedin and Auckland have gone through new stadium debates with the desire to throw money at facilities embedded in residential areas. It's the argument of the anti-stadium people down here that I dislike the most.
Spending money on stadiums that are surrounded by houses seems crazy to me. Sporting facilities should be part of their surrounding location, not in opposition to it.

I reckon dense academic wankery reflects lack of ability or time more than a desire to obscure or to preserve an exclusive club.
I think someone has said this before, but I'll repeat in paraphrase.
Academic papers aren't normally written for a non-academic audience, so there's no point taking the time and length to bring the language down to a layman's level.
In the most case it doesn't represent lack of ability or time. Lots of academics can write and speak wonderfully on their topic, but they're simply applying a horses for courses approach. If only 100 people read a journal, why would you write for the million that don't read it? That's an entirely different book.

Garrett, on the other hand, wouldn't look out of place in an Orwell novel.
As long as it's a really big version of the novel. And you take both sides of the book and bash them together really hard mashing his face in between the pages.
Ahem, sorry. Old habits.

Oh, and the folks who upload stuff have kindly done me a separate edit of the Newsmash:
I think, in the interests of equality, Paul Henry should read out some comments about your moustache, and suggest that you wax more often.
After all, I'm sure he's not sexist.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have a weiner!"
You had to do that voice over at least three times before you could stop giggling right?

New Zealand is really too small for such parochialism.
We like to think big and include the parochialism like a big country does :)
