It will dilute their player base to other Super 14 teams (based in Japan)
Will it? Doesn't the Super 14 have rules or limits on players from foreign countries? I know lots of NZers go over to Japan now to play in their pro teams, but unless the super rules are relaxed, how many NZers or Australians would be able to just jump on a plane and play for the Tokyo Tigers or something?

well, if they pay US$700 billion for the assets (sic), of course the assets will be worth $700 billion. Boom boom! Would you like fries with that, sir? The assets (sic) are worth whatever the market is willing to pay. In this case, the "market" is the US govt. Now, if the US govt. then offers these purchased assets (sic) to the market at a later stage, well, let's just say there is some downside risk involved.
Reading a story on stuff this morning, it said that they are basically going to buy up $700 billion of the worst mortgages and loans - the really stupid ones. So basically they'll be throwing $700 billion dollars at companies that have made really stupid lending decisions, covering the difference between what they lent for the property, and what they're able to sell it for now that the house prices have collapsed.
The government will end up with $700 billion of mortgages on their books that are basically valueless, and which could pretty much be written off on day 1.
The ongoing irony of deregulation and the stupidity of capitalism gone crazy (that public radio show is just astounding) being rescued by fobbing off the loss on the government...

And I certainly believe that no civil rights battle can be won when you're too chicken shit to even start to fight without a green light from pollsters and a focus group.
I really hope you're not still talking about Grant here Craig. Grant's been fighting battles for a long time, and having discussed the matter with him briefly, he's in to win them in the long term. And certainly not chicken shit.

Still, given that every stall holder has a large knife, I'd keep accusations of pansy to myself.
It was the fruit and veg and home made jam that led me to make the pansy comment.
But if there's baked goods, and they're home baked by little old ladies, and they also sell golliwogs, well then I concede and withdraw fully good sir. Never cross a little old lady with her baking, or you won't get none.

Robyn (or anyone else who knows), how exactly is a civil union different to marriage, other than the latter being only for heterosexual couples?
Civil Unions aren't recognised overseas as marriage (and overseas ones here I think), in some parts of the world a NZ civil union isn't recognised as anything. I don't think they have the same powers in adoption laws, and.... something else.

For real? Who knew? I was expecting fruit & veg & home made jam. Will have to go take a look at the local then. Soon.
Well I dunno if some pansy Wellington farmers market will do the same thing. The one in Dunedin is a haven for bacon however.

Paul: I wouldn't be so sure, there are some people in the Labour Party (and CUB supporters like David Farrar) who think this is the first step to genuine marriage equality. And there are others who, for a number of reasons, believe civil unions are as good as it gets and if you don't like it you can shove it.
You'd need to check with Grant, but I'd guess that he doesn't see them as exclusive at all.
I don't see any problem with a world where you have both, civil unions aren't just for same-sex relationships after all.

OTOH, will be quite good for the Heartland unions to have the Shield circulating in their ranks without the big boys coming and hogging it...
If it did end up in he heartland, they would have to defend it in pre-season games against Air NZ Cup teams, so likely it would never make it into the main season where it would be played for during that team's home games during the heartland season - a Air NZ Cup team would snaffle it quick.

(Robert Rakete, and the show was called "The Panel").

Remember this gem from Saatchi's seven years ago? Auckland only gets the best from Kevin.
Didn't Kevin appear on a panel type tv show (er, hosted by Robert Whatshisname, used to do the music show?) shortly after 9-11, and say that the best thing NZ could have done would be to send along several hundred police officers and firemen and soldiers, all climb to the top of the ruins dressed in black, do a haka, and then start digging.
The contrasting look on his face (what a wonderful marketing image!) and the three people on the panel (wow, this person is a scumbag trying to benefit from this horrific event) was very telling.
