Craig, when the Harold offers equal opportunity handjobs like the fulsome one it gave Johnny boy, we can have a conversation. I'm not going to waste my time for now, either.

Meh. I never read the full thing, so can't comment if it was a handjob or not. But equal opportunity?

Helen Clark has been our Prime Minister for 9 years now. Before that leader of the opposition, before that Minister in the 4th Labour Government. I think we have a fair idea of who she is and what she stands for.

John Key on the other hand has come from pretty much no where in political terms. Giving that he's looking fairly likely to be our next PM, it's not unreasonable to be asking who he is. I'd have to hope that the media would take a role in providing that information for us.

The media should be balanced, that doesn't necessarily mean equal opportunity.

  • Busytown: See me grow,

But then the secret will be out, and everyone will want their very own New Zealand town with ice cream!

See, that's my concern. If the tourism people keep telling the world how great it is, eventually everyone will move here and then it won't be so great.

We should keep it on the quiet and just invite people via facebook or something.

    Martin Phillipps done good!
He looks healthy and I was transported back to 1990 for a moment there.

I was watching a video of the 1990 Music Awards (whatever they were called then) the other day. He was wearing a truly ghastly pink shirt which my girlfriend claims to have chosen for him. Every time he got up to collect an award I was half blinded...

Possibly they associate it with being a bit "fruity" (an wholly amorphous term if ever there was one), on account of kiwifruit generally being known as "kiwis" overseas ?

I'm running a very small-scale campaign to change that. Annoys the hell out of me when friends overseas call the fruit 'kiwi'.

If everyone else joined in, we'd reach maybe a whole 10 people, no problem.

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

interviews with celebrities??? to question Palins qualifications to hold office?

Oh give me a fucking break

Heh. Actually I thought he provided a pretty good analysis of the situation.

At least he's giving political interviews. At least as many as the VP candidate.

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

And calling bullshit on an outright deceptive claim that Obama was calling Palin a pig -- outrageous!

TV1 (I think it was) news late last night, had what I think was an overseas feed on this, which was very entertaining. After showing the Obama quote in context, they then showed McCain saying exactly the same thing about Obama's policy.

    It was almost Jon Stewart-like.

Is she saying "they pinched our policies, so we're pinching their sales pitch"?

I'm still enjoying the irony of "they pinched our policies, but we found them lying around so we're releasing them for them".

My pick. National to win by about 4-5 seats over Labour, but with Act gone, and NZ First off the list of partners, they'll struggle to find a coalition.

As a Hawkes Bay supporter, the demise of Otago is the cause of much deep satisfaction. As we've always suspected in the rugby talent rich Hawkes Bay, when thrown back onto their own resources Otago doesn't actually have any. They pillaged us for years, and what goes around comes around. They should move the university to Napier as well, then the scarfies will get a decent climate and live in the North Island, where the rest of the country is.

A flood and an earthquake on your piddly little towns!

Though, yes, Otago rugby. I've not only stopped watching, but stopped even bothering to care if they win or lose. It doesn't seem so long ago that we used to have good teams, fed by the Varsity club, and a pile of All Blacks. Now I'm always surprised when the coach is quoted in the paper as I have no idea who he is or half the players he's talking about.

  • Cracker: Being there is everything.…,

Until the introduction of x-ray machines for NZ domestic air flights, sport-pistol shooters traveling to away-competitions used to take their gun cases on board as carry-on baggage all the time.

About twenty years ago my father took a case of police firearms (four or five pistols) on a domestic flight from Auckland to Wellington. No ammunition, but he just showed them his ID and the contents of the case.

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

Its a controlled vanity piece. It may rate well..likely will but that doesn't change the fact they are hiding her from any serious questioning.

And as someone I think already noted, it's unlikely to be hard questioning. To get the interview NBC possibly had to be the highest - in this case lowest - bidder in terms of 'topics we won't cover', person who will interview you, control over the structure of the interview.

You'd have to hope that a prospective VP - and possible future President - would be willing to face up to an open press conference where people got to ask questions, including the hard ones.

I've been more grilled by the ODT in the past week for a student politics story, than she's been by the entire US media for running for VP of the USA.
