I'm as likely to say "America is stupid" as the next person, but I think saying America is as bad as China on human rights is a stretch, particularly when it comes to elections.

Michelle Obama did indeed speak well. Glad I watched the entire speech, the news last night focused on the video link with her husband. She really peaked near the end of the first ten minutes talking about her father, Dr King, etc.
The swift-boating campaign trying to link Obama with the former Weatherman Bill Ayers is astonishingly cynical and dishonest.
This really is braindead stuff isn't it. Also on the list of people that Obama should have to avoid: Nelson Mandela, most Prime Ministers of Israel, anyone in charge of Russia and/or Georgia at present, the whole Middle East... not to mention the entire current US administration.
Bill Ayers was never involved in any serious terrorist activity though at one stage he certainly planned to. Nor was he convicted of anything upon coming aboveground - charges were dropped due to the misconduct of the FBI and COINTELPRO. The worst he did was participate in the damaging of buildings and a statue.

There is a guy in Parnell who walks his dog up my street every day. The dog is always wearing a dress, though not always the same one. WTF?
Are you more concerned about the dog wearing the dress, or the fact that the owner has a whole set and changes them throughout the week?

Even if they didn't sign a deal, would a government really leave a road in a semi-built condition? I don't believe so - they'd have to step in and finish it whatever the contract said.
I think if the contract doesn't state that the government will pick it up, there is more onus on the private side. If you took a big national or international company, they're unlikely to shut down their whole business because one project ran over. They'd wear the cost and possibly negotiate with government to split it.
If the contract said "government will wear the cost", it's a free ticket for private business to put in a stupid tender, overrun the costs, and then the government to pick up the tab.

What is it with kids & McDonalds?
While I can't say I like it, the people who do the marketing, branding, design work, and create the public image of McDonalds are masters at what they do.
Even in my relatively resistant brain they stand above other takeaway places that I actually like the food of better.
In my son's brain, no contest.

Can words be copyrighted?
Yes they can.
I'm pretty sure they can't. Brand names can be trademarked, though, along with the logos.
Ah yup. Trademark I should have said.

Yes they can.
It's also (I understand) the primary reason that PC chips changed from 286, 386 etc, to 'pentium'. You can't legally protect a number, you can protect a name.

It gives privilege to the print media, which can then charge the customer to release the information - I notice the Herald article says buy tomorrow' s Herald to find out the names. Correspondingly, the ban discriminates against free, unmediated conversations on Internet.
That's an interesting perspective on it Paul. I wonder if the traditional media, who have the money to challenge these sorts of things in court, are going to do so, or do so as aggressively as they would if if they were shut out.

I think we can say confidently that cello has become a word in itself.
And eighties is already a word in itself, the reference to the decade is only one possible use.

Spot the judge pissing into the wind there. The TV3 and TV 1 news stories will be up on youtube before you can say "freedom of information on the information super highway".
